Huge thanks to for supporting our final-year Advanced Audio module with the loan of multiple .official and consoles.

Having access to real, industry-standard control surfaces meant students weren’t just learning theory — they were building, patching, and interconnecting complex multi-channel digital audio systems across platforms, exactly as they would on a professional show site.

At the same time, our Advanced Lighting cohort were diving into the world of timecode, exploring how sound, lighting, and video departments synchronise to deliver seamless, show-critical playback and automation.

Two modules. One goal. Real-world skills, real-world kit, real-world workflows.

This is what production training should look like.

Final-year Integrated Systems Design students were joined by Sam and Angus from Ideaworks for a guest session on designing and building bespoke control systems and custom technology solutions.

They also spoke with our first- and second-year students about what a placement year looks like — Ideaworks have supported a number of our students over the years, giving them hands-on experience in one of the UK’s leading AV integration companies.

Great to have Sam, one of our own graduates, back to share his insight from industry.

In September, two of our students joined Robe on their stand at this year’s PLASA Show, representing the brand during the 3 day event. They were also give the incredible opportunity to meet lighting design legend Tim Routledge.

A huge thank you to for the invitation once again and for their continued support of the course, and well done to Ellie & Joe for being selected for this unique experience!

Our second-year Sound System Engineering students have been hands-on with two of the industry’s leading loudspeaker ecosystems — d&b audiotechnik and Martin Audio.

Across the sessions, they explored system design and prediction software, system control and tuning tools, and even got practical with rigging techniques for each brand.

Massive thanks to Magnum PA and Stage Sound Services for supplying the equipment and helping our students experience real-world systems up close.

Real kit, real learning, real industry experience.

Students on the Year 2 Lighting Control Techniques module were joined by George from SR Production Services, who delivered a session on busking techniques — setting up and operating lighting consoles for live performance environments.

George shared invaluable, console-agnostic expertise drawn directly from industry practice. Students then put these new skills into action using a range of professional desks from Avolites, ChamSys, and MA Lighting, visualising their console setup with Capture.

Huge thanks to George, SR Production Services and Chamsys for helping our students bridge the gap between theory and the realities of live event control.

Day two of the Autumn Term, and we were already out in the industry 👏 Thank you to Stage Sound Services, Utilita Arena Cardiff, and the Wales Millennium Centre for showing our first-years what really goes on behind the scenes of live events in South Wales.

An incredible day at in London, with laser talk from - lighting designer Durham Marenghi. Staff showed the use of Depence and softwares for pre-visulisation and programming of lasers and pyro effects - then into setup, safety and product demonstrations with a show programmed by - also great to catch up with USW alumni working at ER!

Students worked alongside staff, and external contractors to have a permenant stage structure with PA and LX rig in their Student Union space. We’re always listening to students for ways to enhance their experience at University!
