The GB Masters Wheelchair squad hosted their final open trial session.

The Magnus Community Sports Centre in Newark and has been confirmed as the new home venue for the GB Masters Wheelchair programme, and will form the training base for all future sessions, with Newark Jaguars Coach, Ian Brown, also stepping up to take the Head Coach role.
As this was the final open trial, the session was focused on drills and skills to allow the coaching and management team to assess the players as individuals and within the team. The first set focused on shooting, starting with layups before gradually increasing the range to the 3 point line, before the group was split into 4 for some mini-games where the players were not only being assessed on their individual points classification matchups , but also on their communication.

Teamwork and chair positioning are key to the success or failure of a wheelchair team, so the next set of drills saw each team have 14 seconds to “run the gauntlet” and get at least 2 players past their opposition at each line on the court. The drill really focused on spatial awareness, working together and communication and highlighted some areas for development as the squad moves forward

Some final game style positioning and shooting drills showed the chair control, speed and attitude before some final competitive games where the coaches worked on some different combinations to see how certain players worked on court with each other.

"I can’t believe how far this programme has come in the past year, since we started it. What started as a group of individuals looking to continue playing at a higher level has grown to a level now where we have to select a competitive squad to move forward with. The players really stepped up to the challenge today and pushed themselves and each other hard, giving us a lot to think about, which is all we can ask. The future is exciting for this programme and other nations are beginning to see what we are building and replicating it themselves, which can only be good for the growth of the Masters game internationally."

GB Masters Basketball +55 Women Start Their Season Off in Coventry.

The GB Masters Women’s +55 team came together in Coventry to kick-start the new season, welcoming a new Head Coach alongside returning players and new faces trialling for the team.

The weekend began by establishing the team’s philosophy, with a clear focus on supporting every player to reach their potential and building a strong, united team. We also outlined how we intend to play this season, setting expectations around individual responsibilities, teamwork and decision-making on court.

It was a demanding weekend, with tired legs and weary bodies by the end of the second day, but plenty of smiles along the way. The effort, attitude and commitment shown by the players throughout both days were superb. It was particularly encouraging to see improvements in positioning, maintaining focus when fatigued and applying strong defensive principles around the zone. The group responded well to the challenges presented, demonstrating resilience, determination and a willingness to learn.

A huge thank you to all the players for their enthusiasm, hard work and commitment. A special mention must go to Sam Wright, who, despite being unable to participate physically due to injury, still turned up and went above and beyond to support the team. From preparing and sweeping the court to keeping water bottles topped up, Sam’s contribution was invaluable and helped make the weekend such a success. That level of commitment reflects the team spirit we want to build.

Overall, it was an excellent start to the season, with solid foundations laid both on and off the court. There is plenty of work ahead, but the attitude and determination shown in Coventry provide real encouragement for the months to come.

We look forward to building on this progress at our next training weekend on 7–8 November as we continue to develop as a team and prepare for the season ahead.

GB Masters Basketball +50s Men Start their Road to Munich.

The first training session of the season for the GB Masters +50 Men took place over the weekend at a new venue, Hartpury College. With impressive facilities, including a double-court setup, the venue provides an excellent environment to support the development of the squad throughout the season.

There was a strong turnout, with a good mix of returning players and trialists in attendance. It is particularly encouraging to see such positive numbers within the group, with some players now progressing into the +55 Men’s age category. This reflects the continued depth and development of the GB Masters programme, while creating opportunities for players to continue their international basketball journey as they move through the age groups. Further players are expected to attend the November session.

Head Coach Danny James led the session, supported by Assistant Coach Adam Cole and Darren Cooke, who joins the coaching team as an additional assistant coach. Darren’s appointment will provide valuable support as the group continues to grow and the coaches work towards building competitive squads for the 2027 tournament programme.

Player assessments will continue across the October and November sessions, with squad selections to follow in preparation for the 2027 competition programme. The tournament schedule has yet to be confirmed, although the management team is considering a number of potential destinations.

The team will not be travelling to Brazil for the 2027 FIMBA World Championships. The timing of the event and the associated costs would present significant challenges for both players and coaching staff, and alternative opportunities are being considered.

Overall, the opening session was a positive start to the season, with good numbers, a strong atmosphere and plenty of potential within the group. The new venue, expanded coaching team and encouraging level of attendance provide a solid platform as preparations continue for 2027.

The GB Masters +70 Men’s programme held a successful joint training camp on 4th and 5th October, bringing together players from the GB +70 Men’s team and the England +70 Men’s squad.

The camp provided an excellent opportunity for both groups of players to train together, develop their understanding on court and continue building the strength and depth of Masters basketball at +70 level.

For the England players, the weekend also formed an important part of the selection process for the England +70 Men’s squad competing in the Tri-Nations +70 Men’s tournament in Scotland at the end of November. The sessions provided the coaching staff with an opportunity to assess players in a competitive training environment ahead of finalising the squad.

A total of 24 players attended across the weekend, with at least a further four players unable to attend due to the dates. The numbers are particularly encouraging when compared with the position just three years ago, when the GB +70 squad consisted of around 15 players.

The continued growth in participation demonstrates the increasing strength and interest in Masters basketball at the higher age groups. It also provides a strong foundation for the future development of the programme.

There was a particularly positive atmosphere throughout the weekend, with experienced players working alongside newer members of the squad. It is hoped that some of the players who joined the England group will also become involved with the GB Masters +70 programme and attend future training sessions.
