Greater Cold (大寒 Dàhán), the last solar term before the Spring Festival
Preparations for the Spring Festival is busy yet joyful, and the pre-festival chores could take as long as a month and require everyone in the family to be involved, whether they are cleaning up the clutter, or preparing New Year' s decorations, food, goods and gifts.
There are many 'Spring Festival' traditions that are well kept and followed in various parts of China, like cleaning up the clutter (除尘), buying sesame stalks (买芝麻秸), putting up Spring Festival Couplets (贴春联), pasting up the Fu character (贴福字), offering sacrifices to the kitchen god and wish for blessing (祭灶王爷), firecrackers and fireworks (放鞭炮烟花), red envelopes (压岁钱), New Year's Eve dinner (年夜饭), and eating glutinous rice cake (吃年糕)...

Over 2,000 years ago, ancient Chinese scholars observed the changing patterns in our natural world: the climates, the turning of the seasons, and astronomy. Lesser Cold (小寒 Xiǎohán) is the 23rd of the 24 Solar Terms. It usually begins around the 5-6 January, when the Sun reaches the celestial longitude of 285°.
Lesser Cold implies that the cold air accumulation hasn’t reached its peak; however, as it usually arrives around the 3rd nine-day periods (三九 sānjiǔ) following the Winter Solstice, it marks the beginning of the coldest days of the year for most areas of China.

About the Thirteen Hongs of Canton
The Thirteen Hongs of Canton (Guangzhou) was once the gate through which China connected with the world, as well as the window through which the world got to know China.
The word "Hong (行)", in Cantonese, means large trading houses. From 1757 to 1842, the Thirteen Hongs of Canton represented the only Chinese official trading hub that handled trade with the West.

About Pith Paper Painting
While travelling in China during the first half of the 19th century it became common for Europeans to collect small, attractive watercolour paintings by local artists. These ‘export paintings’ usually depicted scenes of everyday life in China as well as decorative images of birds, insects and flowers. They were often treated as souvenirs, bound in albums and taken back to Europe.
The paintings are very striking in their vibrant colours and translucency, which is due to the support on which they are painted. Instead of being made from plant fibres matted together, as with traditional paper, the soft white support is a thin slice of the stem of the Tetrapanax papyrifer plant. The velvet-like texture of the pith ‘paper’ lends itself well to the application of watercolours, and its ability to absorb water to alter the surface characteristics means the paint layer is raised, creating an attractive embossed surface.

"Heavy Snow" solar term (大雪 Dàxuě) is the 21st of the 24 Solar Terms. It usually begins around the 7 December, when the Sun reaches the celestial longitude of 255°.
Chinese farmers love snow. They say that heavy snow gives the promise of a prosperous new year (瑞雪兆丰年). You can also tell from another farmer's proverb, "three layers of snow on wheat this year, a sound sleep on bread next year (冬天麦盖三层被,来年枕着馒头睡)".
