Our June Spotify playlist features I Fagiolini's latest recording, with two multi-choir masses by Orazio Benevoli (1605-72), from mid-17th-century Rome (one for Easter, the other one based on Palestrina's motet for Pentecost).

They complete I Fagiolini's dazzling series exploring the ‘Colossal Baroque’ and tribute to the 'lost' music of Orazio Benevoli.

Maestro of the Ca****la Giulia at St Peter's, Rome, Benevoli's mastery of surround-sound is clear in these very different works. The sheer quality of his music shines through and changes our view of 17th-century multi-choir music.

"It’s always a treat to combine forces with The English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble - ECSE – they are such superb musicians, and the depth of sound they bring to this repertoire is just wonderful." So says Rory McCleery of The Marian Consort ahead of their collaborative performance of Bach and Palestrina, on 16 April.

"They are also so the ideal collaborators for a vocal ensemble, as they are so sensitive to text, the vocal blend and the shaping of the lines, amplifying all of these things that we strive to bring to the audience in performance."
