HAVE YOUR SAY
Consultation on the reorganisation of local government runs until 13th August (see link in comments) and this includes a survey - to have your say go to:

www.shapingwestsussex.org

OPTIONS FOR CHANGE

The legislation constrains what can be done. It includes a target size for a new Unitary authority of around 500,000 residents. After evaluation of 16 potential options by the existing local authorities, the most viable ones are:

1. ONE BIG AUTHORITY
West Sussex County Council amalgamating all 7 district councils to form a new mega West Sussex Council of 900,000 people.

2. TWO SMALLER ONES
Two smaller councils with Mid Sussex being part of an authority based on the existing district councils of Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex and possibly Adur. Around 400,000 to 450,000 people.

It would take on all of West Sussex County Council’s responsibilities for the area of the new authority.

FEWER COUNCILLORS
It is likely that a single authority on the West Sussex boundaries will only have a max of 100 councillors for 900,000 residents (Boundary Commission guidance). The two smaller Unitary Authorities will have around 70 each. So a better ratio of Cllr to residents with smaller authorities.

There is a separate process for the Mayoral elections in a new pan-Sussex and Brighton authority that will take place next year which is part of the government's devolution programme.
