At Words for Gaza, we honour the lives and legacies of Al Jazeera reporter Anas al-Sharif and his colleagues Mohammed Qriqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and Moan Aliwa.
On August 7th, Israel approved a plan to take control of Gaza City, which will lead to yet more bloodshed and displacement. And on August 10th, mere days after announcing this next escalation, Israel killed the entire Al Jazeera in a deliberate air strike on a media tent outside al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City.
The targeting of journalists is a war crime which Israel is getting away with time and time again. This is not a new strategy. In May 2022, prominent Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was shot and killed while covering a raid by the Israel Defense Forces.
Since October 7th 2023, almost 270 journalists and media staff have been killed in what is now estimated to be the deadliest war for journalism. Israel is systematically silencing Palestinian truth tellers in Gaza and erasing their voices.
At this critical point, we must stay alert and echo the messages Israel wants to suppress. These young journalists have lived to cover the true extent of brutality that’s being committed against their people — and they have been killed for it.
We want to honour their memory, their incredible work, resilience, and courage by sharing Anas al-Sharif’s final message with you here.
Israel wants the truth in Gaza to die with it's journalists. We can't let that happen. Your voice is a weapon against censorship. Here’s how to fight back:
LISTEN: Pay close attention to Anas al-Sharif's final message. Hear the truth he gave his life to tell.
SHARE: Post his message, this tribute, and stories from other Palestinian journalists. Use the hashtag .
DEMAND: Contact news organisations and MPs to demand they call for accountability for these war crimes.
