At Words for Gaza, we honour the lives and legacies of Al Jazeera reporter Anas al-Sharif and his colleagues Mohammed Qriqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and Moan Aliwa.

On August 7th, Israel approved a plan to take control of Gaza City, which will lead to yet more bloodshed and displacement. And on August 10th, mere days after announcing this next escalation, Israel killed the entire Al Jazeera in a deliberate air strike on a media tent outside al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City.

The targeting of journalists is a war crime which Israel is getting away with time and time again. This is not a new strategy. In May 2022, prominent Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was shot and killed while covering a raid by the Israel Defense Forces.

Since October 7th 2023, almost 270 journalists and media staff have been killed in what is now estimated to be the deadliest war for journalism. Israel is systematically silencing Palestinian truth tellers in Gaza and erasing their voices.

At this critical point, we must stay alert and echo the messages Israel wants to suppress. These young journalists have lived to cover the true extent of brutality that’s being committed against their people — and they have been killed for it.

We want to honour their memory, their incredible work, resilience, and courage by sharing Anas al-Sharif’s final message with you here.

Israel wants the truth in Gaza to die with it's journalists. We can't let that happen. Your voice is a weapon against censorship. Here’s how to fight back:

LISTEN: Pay close attention to Anas al-Sharif's final message. Hear the truth he gave his life to tell.

SHARE: Post his message, this tribute, and stories from other Palestinian journalists. Use the hashtag .

DEMAND: Contact news organisations and MPs to demand they call for accountability for these war crimes.

We’re beyond honoured to announce the total raised for the first Words for Gaza fundraiser!

A huge thanks to everybody who attended, donated and shared our content. These funds will make a vital difference to the four families we’re supporting, and contribute towards essential medical aid through MAP.

We’re really proud of what this community has been able to achieve together, and we’re inspired to keep creating spaces for solidarity, activism and fundraising. So, we recommend watching this space.

With hope and solidarity,

Words for Gaza

We’re nearing the end of our donations window, and the big reveal for how much we’ve managed to raise. We’re already blown away by the support and donations we’ve received, but there’s still time to raise even more funds for Layla, Ruba, Ahmed and Adham’s families.

We’re now more than halfway there, but with the end of our fundraiser fast approaching, we need your help to make it all the way. Your donations will provide these families with the means to secure vital supplies, aid, and transport. If you can, please spare them anything you’re able to donate, and share this post far and wide.

Thank you!

We're still in awe at the amazing evening we shared with our speakers and our audience on Sunday.

We started this journey because we felt isolated in our rage and in our desire for action on behalf of the people of Palestine.

After Sunday, we're feeling more inspired than ever that when we come together as a community, change is possible. We love you, Bristol.

In honour of an incredible gathering, we wanted to post a few of our favourite images, and some behind the scenes moments from the night, showcasing the warmth and spirit of community and solidarity at the root of the event. Courtesy of our wonderful photographer

Stay tuned for highlight reels coming soon, and please keep sharing and donating to our Crowdfunder. Link in bio.

“Almost everyone we talked to spoke of hope. They wanted their story to be a hopeful story.” – Mahmoud Muna on Daybreak in Gaza

What an incredible evening of solidarity Sunday was. Whilst what we heard was often difficult or painful, we’re sure that many of you felt, as we did, that hope shone through.

We want to thank all our wonderful speakers, our beyond generous audience, and everyone who has donated so far.

But with your help, there’s still time for us to raise more. Our donation window is open for just one more week, so, if you can, please spread the word far and wide and donate using the link in our bio.

Your donations would mean so much to the four families we’re supporting, and to the recipients of aid from MAP, especially as conditions in Gaza continue to deteriorate.

Let’s keep the hope for a free Palestine alive together.

🌟 PROGRAMME, BIG NEWS & TICKETS 🌟

Here it is, folks – the running order for this evening’s star-studded fundraiser for MAP and four Palestinian families.

If you’re coming, you should have an email with some more details about what to expect. Please give it a read before you arrive.

While we’re sad Sukina Noor is unable to grace us with her beautiful presence, we’re honoured that Peter Oswald will step in to read his poems on Gaza before the break. We’re sure this will set the tone for the very special play reading after the intermission.

It’s such a privilege to arrange this huge cultural evening with so much help from our volunteers, authors, spoken word artists, actors, Peter Oswald, Nick Bilbrough from The Hands Up Project, the Bristol Palestine Alliance, our lovely audience this evening, and everyone who has donated and intend to do so. Thanks so, so much!

NOTE: We may be able to sell tickets on the door – look out for an IG story with an update by 4 pm!

On October 13th, Words for Gaza is hosting an evening of readings, theatre and solidarity to raise funds for , and for four families from Gaza who need urgent support.

These families, along with so many others in Gaza and the occupied West Bank have had their lives turned upside down by the ongoing genocide. They are facing extended separation from each other, displacement from their homes, disrupted education and serious delays to receiving urgent medical care.

If you aren’t able to join us for the evening itself, donations and words of support are very much welcome. The link to donate and find out more about the families we will be supporting is in the Words for Gaza bio.
