25/10/2024

Almost two weeks ago, we gathered at the Club Central Conference and Out-of-School Club Awards in London, bringing together near 200 out-of-school and wraparound childcare sector professionals.

And what a day it was!!!

Thank you to everyone that supported this year's event and contributed to its theme of Creating Sustainable Futures. We hope everyone took away actionable ideas they can implement in their organisations.

Delegates highlighted how useful it was to have the Department for Education and Ofsted in the same room, engaging with providers. We also had an inspiring video address from Stephen Morgan, Minister for Early Education.

This year's keynote speakers shared their sector knowledge and expertise generously, and we also had the opportunity to hear from speakers in and outside of our sector on topics of playwork, diversity and inclusion, leadership, recruitment and much more.

Amongst all that learning we also got to play, with group games and practical demonstrations in the exhibitor hall, as well as during roundtable discussions.

The OSCAs ceremony was just the celebration we needed after a day of connecting and learning (with a Cherry Bomb on top!).

And the evening highlight was the moment that Rebekah Jackson Reece received the 2024 Outstanding Achievement award for all that she has done to support the sector in the past 12 months.

Thank you to all involved! Until next time 🤩

šŸ† Outstanding Achievement šŸ† Out-of-School Club Awards

WINNER šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘ Rebekah Jackson Reece

This award is Tanya's choice. It is given to someone who has made a remarkable contribution to the sector. It might be someone who did not fit into the award categories or someone whose entry really stood out as being extraordinary.

For those of your who have been at the conference today, you will know that out of school is a sector on the move. Where it was once forgotten, it now has an investment of £289 million. And there is one person who has represented the sector from the front.

She is clear that she does not lobby. But what she does is use her counsel and influence wisely. If you know her, you can see her good work running through the National Wraparound Childcare Programme. She is absolutely passionate about making the sector stronger. She fights the corner not just for her members, but for the sector as a whole.

She is, to be fair, a very good friend of the Club Central Conference, but quite aside from that, she is the person who has mostly greatly impacted the sector for the benefit of all.

The winner received a staggering nomination from 12 parents and one teacher just for this award. The strength of parent admiration for the club shone through. Half the time I struggle to get him to leave as he just doesn't want to come home. Highly recommended."

Highly Commended šŸ‘ Brilliant Play CIC

Shortlisted:

This category was very highly contested. We had 31 entries. The standard was extremely high. It is evident that the people who provide HAF (Holiday Activities and Food) are a passionate group of people who all really care about the wellbeing of not only children, but also their families. It was a hard one to judge.

Winner was selected because we felt they showed us most clearly how they had gone above and beyond what might be expected of them... and the instance that really resonated was the setting up of a second-hand children's clothes rail, engaging use of food to encourage healthy eating at home and using the club's washing machine to launder the clothes of a family living in temporary accommodation.

Thank you to The Playwork Foundation for sponsoring this year's OSCA for Play Setting of the Year.

This entry was selected because it is a dynamic, evolving space where creativity, risk-taking and social interaction are at the forefront. It is a place where play is considered a powerful vehicle for learning and development. It sounds like the sort of place the judges would love to visit. And, they told us this story which the judges loved!

"The play team recently had a delightful experience visiting a makeshift "hospital" for some playful check-ups from one of our long standing attendees and two newly-recruited assistants. Inside this imaginative rehab centre, two nurses and a surgeon managed the entire operation. The surgeon conducted all the check-ups, summoning each playworker to her inspection chair, while the nurses diligently documented the findings on paper with crayons. They made use of an old first aid kit filled with plasters and bandages. Once summoned, the surgeon scribbled diagnoses like "worst ever" and "bad" on our arms with black sharpie.

Once diagnosed, we were given equally whimsical prescriptions — ranging from wearing a tutu around our necks, to applying a plaster over our "injection" sites (more black sharpie related marks), and if you dared to try and escape, you were restrained in the chair with a skipping rope.

Each playworker emerged (a bit dazed and confused) with a unique and amusing diagnosis, leading to the name "The Worst Hospital Ever."

The winning entrant showed us how important it is for all children to feel valued and heard. And how the use of simple 'how are you today?' questions can have a powerful impact when the answer is really listened to. It is a place where going the extra mile is normal.

This is always a hard category to judge because there are some amazing people who go above and beyond what might be expected of their role. But our winner does not have a paid role. She is a volunteer. As the chair of a committee, this person is involved in HR, staff development, fundraising, project management and has a mantra of 'will this benefit the children in our care?'
