Bodmin Folk Club

Bodmin Folk Club The home of traditional folk song in Cornwall. Established 1968. They decided to start a club to raise funds for British folksingers to visit Cornwall.

In the Late 1960s a tide of contemporary American folk music was sweeping Britain and several clubs in Cornwall featured this material. However, in 1967 a small group of traditional singers, including Vic Legg and Lar Cann started meeting for weekly sessions in the Masons' Arms, Bodmin. The first recorded club night of the Bodmin Traditional Folk Club, as it was then, was on 31st May 1968 in an upper room at The Barley Sheaf.

This coming Friday, 11th September sees a return visit by the amazing Australian singer songwriter, Bruce Watson.
Bruce is an icon of the Australian folk scene. He has appeared at almost 200 folk festivals across Australia since the 1990s. He plays regularly at festivals, folk clubs, house concerts and other venues throughout Australia.

Performers of the calibre of Eric Bogle, Joe Dolce, Greg Champion, Blackwood and a host of other Australian and international performers have covered Bruce Watson's songs.

Bruce has received the Declan Affley Memorial Songwriting Award at the National Folk Festival for the song Amazon, which has been recorded by Eric Bogle and many other Australian and overseas artists.

Other awards include Port Fairy Folk Festival’s Lawson-Paterson Songwriting Award and Maldon Folk Festival’s Roddy Reed Memorial Songwriting Award.

He has produced seven albums of original songs, plus a songbook of his own compositions: “101 Songs”. He also appears on more than 20 compilation CDs alongside artists such as Eric Bogle, Roy Bailey, Archie Roach, Yothu Yindi and Christine Anu.

Bruce has a keen sense of the absurdities of life. Nothing is sacred, but many things are precious. A concern for people, the environment, reconciliation and for life's mysteries and ironies runs through his songs. His serious songs are both moving and challenging, and he is not afraid to tackle the hard issues.

The humour can be sharp - or at times just plain silly. Victims of Bruce's satirical pen range from Leonard Cohen to Pauline Hanson. Don't miss songs like Save the Hippy, I Shared a Urinal with Martin Ferguson, The Rules of English,The Wando Vale Annual Sheep Dog Trial, and Toddler with Attitude!

His act is one to be seen as well as heard, with plenty of audience involvement and usually a few surprises. Bruce will make you laugh, cry – and think.

We meet in an upstairs room but there is a stairlift. byo alcohol but we do a great line in tea and chocolate biscuits

Sitting in the Gorsedh concert tonight, a lady came up to me and thanked me for the great night she had at Bodmin Folk Club last night and how welcome we had made her and what a friendly club it is.

What an amazing night at Bodmin Folk Club! Our guests Mike O'Connor and Barbara Griggs gave us an evening of songs and tunes from, and inspired by, Cornwall. Mike's lyrics, soaring fiddle playing and concertina sat hand in hand with Barbara's fine harp giving a blend of light and shade, songs to join in with and evocative tunes.
Lots of visitors to the club and one guest commented that we must have some of the best floor singers anywhere in the country!
Overall a very fine night.

Last night's theme, songs I wish I had learnt, gave some of us the chance to air some daft songs, well tempered with the more poignant . Vic keeping us in order in his customary lively manner , and winning the Abdul a Bul Bul Ameer standoff by dint of singing first. Plus a more chaotic than usual raffle. Great evening.

Another really enjoyable evening , with many songs round the farming theme. Lovely to see Ian West. He is an excellent fiddler and was playing for Trigg Morris when they first started dancing. Hope he comes along again when he's down this way.

What a truly wonderful night from Finley Bray , his family and friends. Music, songs and dancing from Finley, his Dad Matthew Bray , his sister Eva, and Cas Davey who had hand built all the stringed instruments played, plus Suraya Andrews who got up to dance with Eva.
Everyone at Bodmin Folk Club wishes Finley the very best as he takes up his place at Glasgow Conservatoire of Music later this summer.
