Don't let the soft, curly coat fool you! What's that dog? It's the Bedlington Terrier πŸ‘

Originating in Northumberland, United Kingdom (and once known further north as the Rothbury Terrier), this breed’s roots are wrapped in mystery. Breed historians still debate whether their ancestry traces back to the Bull Terrier, the Otterhound, or the Dandie Dinmont.

The linty coat and distinctive arched loin of the Bedlington and his long head give him a lamb-like appearance, but he is an excellent dispatcher of vermin from rabbit to fox!

What's that dog? It's the Poodle! 🐩

The Standard Poodle is a glamorous, intelligent breed who descended from European duck hunters.

The ancestors of the breed were various water dogs of Europe. The trim, which is sometimes viewed as a fashionable fancy trim for show dogs, is in fact traditional and very practical: the hindquarters being clipped to aid the dog’s propulsion in swimming and the protective bands of hair (now fancifully called pom-poms) left on the joints and tip of the tail for protection from cold.

Cyclops this, Circe that πŸ₯± This is the REAL star of The Odyssey 🌟

Odysseus's beloved canine companion, Argos, was played by a breed you may not have heard of before: the Portuguese Podengo. This little rabbit hunter comes in multiple sizes, and is an ancient breed, perfectly cast in Christopher Nolan's blockbuster retelling.

The breed bears some common ancestry with the Pharaoh hounds, brought into the Mediterranean by Phoenician sailors. Podengo means 'rabbit hunter' or 'warren hound' and this hunting ability, along with his skill in controlling vermin around the house made him very popular in Portugal from the 16th century. Nowadays he retains that popularity but mostly as a family companion where his friendly temperament, character and intelligence make him a great personality.

The breed has three sizes – small, medium and large and two coats – the smooth haired variety – developed in the wetter climate of northern Portugal and the wire coated in drier areas where the wire coat could often protect against the sun. Only the smallest variety is seen in the UK.

Two new breeds are becoming recognised πŸ“£

The Braque du Bourbonnais originates in France’s Bourbonnais region and is an ancient pointing breed dating back to the 16th century. Known for its hunting ability and friendly, adaptable nature, it is growing in popularity both as a gundog and companion.

The Epagneul Français dates back to the 14th century, and is an ancient French gundog prized for its intelligence, versatility and gentle temperament. After a period of a decline, they're now growing popular as both a working dog and family companion.

Both breeds will be recognised from 1 October 2026, taking the total recognised breeds to 230.

Have you met, or do you own one of these breeds? Let us know! πŸ’¬
