The 1834 Chapter of Promulgation & The Long Ride Home
To standardize the ritual, a Chapter of Promulgation was formed in 1835. They de-Christianised the ritual and officially opened the Order to all Master Masons. But there was a catch: they strictly refused to print it. Companions had to watch the demonstration in London and frantically try to memorize the exact wording on their multi-day horse-and-carriage journeys back home!

Warwickshire Freemasons: September Wrap‑Up 🏛️

A brilliant week across the Province to get the Masonic season started again with heritage, history, family moments, four initiates, an exaltation and a packed installation.

Wednesday 9 September
Lodge of Impartiality No. 5101 – Installation
WBro James Murrell was installed into the Chair in a superb ceremony.
WBro Gary Davis handed over the reins, Light Blues, Heart of England Lodge and the Widow’s Sons all turned out in force to support. 🏍️😎
APGM Avtar Panesar joined the celebration, which was warm, lively and full of laughter.

Friday 11 September
Meridian Lodge – Quadruple Initiation
Forty brethren packed into the lodge room for four simultaneous initiations - no small feat for those who know the space.
The candidates were superb, the Festive Board was buzzing, and credit goes to David Leask, Dave Richards, and Mark Tyers(JD) for flawless organisation.
Plus four new joining members.
Welcome Aaron, Adam, Alex and Tom.
Meridian now rests until May when WM Matt Perkins will be installing his father in a Family in Freemasonry celebration. 🔨✨

Saturday 12 September
Nuneaton Lodge Rooms – Heritage Open Day
Over 150 visitors came through the doors, exploring the building, history and displays. A fantastic public engagement day. 🏛️

Michael Price Lodge – 50 Years for WBro Peter Johnston
APGM Matt Perkins presented a 50‑year certificate to WBro Peter Johnston, a Brother who guided Matt during his early days at Meridian.
Peter’s son Rupert flew in from Dubai for the occasion, attending his first meeting in 20 years.
RWBro Michael Price himself was in the Chair, making the morning even more special. 🎖️💙

St Mary’s Chapter No. 7244 – Exaltation
A wonderful morning witnessing Bro Cassius being exalted into his father’s Chapter.
Several Companions (including a certain Past 2nd Grand Principal) stepped into officers’ chairs to make it a truly memorable meeting. 🔺👏

Before the 1834 standardisation, Royal Arch ceremonies looked quite different! Originally heavily Christian and restricted only to Past Masters, the rituals featured an interesting dramatic flair. In one surviving historical account, Sojourners (the candidates) were bound with lifelines and supplied with "proper refreshment" (a glass of w**e) in the middle of the ceremony to assist them in their labours.

What do you remember about joining the Royal Arch or are you yet to take that step and want to find out more ?

When, how, and where did the Royal Arch originate? The honest answer from top Masonic scholars is simply: we don’t know. The earliest record of a Brother being "Raised" to the Royal Arch is in Bristol in 1738. Because the early workings were so fragmented, 1834 became a massive watershed moment for the Order when a special committee was formed to finally clarify and confirm the ceremonies.
