What do you do when the waste from one of your popular kits is a perfect circle?

Run a competition at Miniatura, of course!

That's exactly what Jane Harrop did on their stall this past Spring. Each purchaser was given a wooden disc and was given a few months to put a little scene on top of it, with all entrants receiving a £5 voucher it was win/win!

The judging was tough and Jane's long time students eventually settled on this beautiful Windmill by Rita Hinds as the winner of the £50 voucher top prize.

The workmanship was so good they thought that this was made from a kit! In fact, it was created from scratch out of card and the detail on the surrounding scenery is exquisite and tipped the win in their favour. Well done Rita!

A big thank you comes directly from Jane to everyone else who entered.

Every show we at Miniatura are inspired by the makers ingenuity, you and your fans impress us every time!

One of the very best things about the dollshouse hobby is that the world you create is, entirely and undeniably, yours. You can make whatever you want, in whatever way you want and paint it purple with pink spots… if you really want. The only limit is your imagination and if you need inspiration then will find a wealth of fantastical whimsy through magical miniature makers from all around this wonderful world.

Our Mini-Guide on DREAM will help you open up new horizons of what could happen in your miniature world.

So the house is built, the furniture made and everything is just how it should be… but don’t those tables and cupboards look just a little bare?

Fortunately we just happen to know lots of brilliant makers who create fascinating food, precise packages, detailed drinks and terrific toiletries. Everything you might need to make your rooms look “real”. If you want things to look “really real” and include a few spillages, broken bottles and grubby patches… we know makers who do that too!

The Mini-Guide on PROVISIONS will introduce you to personal shoppers who can get you what you need from the supermarket to your home within your home.

“The home should be the treasure chest of living.” – Le Corbusier

Once your house is ready, you come to one of the BIG decisions. Does anyone “live” there? Some miniaturists want there home to be pristine, perfect examples of precise interior design. The “model” home is a thing of beauty after all. Others prefer to have occupants of one kind or another and so must make a choice. Do you have dolls and animals inside your home or do you just have the clues that some unseen family exist?

If you want either of the latter then our LIFE Mini-Guide can help. At the very least you will need plants or discarded clothes (neatly folded or just dropped on a chair?). All of these things create a living breathing home which will reward you by conjuring up stories that you didn’t even notice before they were there.

It may no longer be a picture perfect house anymore but perhaps, as a home, it is better for it?

Perhaps of all the things in our houses; the paintings, vases, photographs, lampshades and even the flowers, cushions and curtains all show our choices and preferences. They speak of who we are and what we hold most dear. When you come to start adding these items to your miniature home you may find yourself either emulating your real home or perhaps taking a different road. Either way, enjoy the process, it’s all about you respecting your choices. The possibilities are endless with some of the finest miniatures being made in these fields. In a way everything about a dollshouse is an ornament to our real world.

Our Mini-Guide on ORNAMENT will help you add “colour” and “flavour” to your miniature home.

It’s always intrigued me that if you are told to either “sit up” or “sit down” you always end up in the same position. Either way you are always going to need a chair, and what’s a chair without a table and a few more chairs, oh and a sofa and a stool and before you know it .. cupboards, kitchen units, dressers and in the end … we all need that most essential throne of all in the bathroom.

Our Mini-Guide on FURNISH will help you find everything you need to sit, store, stow, shelve and sculpt those empty rooms into the model miniature home.

Choosing a miniature house should be a pleasure, but one that is best done properly. Will you be buying a house that is finished and ready to move into or something that needs a little work?

If going the latter route then there are many aspects you will need to consider, wall covering, window frames, lighting, to name but a few. Whichever route you go, our Mini-Guide on BUILDING is priceless.

Consider your price range carefully and factor in how much you do and don’t want to do yourself. Also think about how much space you have within your full size house for your miniature house. This will set you off to a good start as you choose a building, be it your first or your next.

It's a maze of choices but our guide should help with those tough decisions.

“The intentions of a tool are what it does. A hammer intends to strike, a vise intends to hold fast, a lever intends to lift. They are what it is made for. But sometimes a tool may have other uses that you don’t know. Sometimes in doing what you intend, you also do what the knife intends, without knowing.” – Philip Pullman

On our website we have a series of Mini-Guides based around different aspects of the hobby.

These are the places to find the tools and materials that will make making easier (and more fun). Found on our Mini-Guide under the EQUIPMENT section.

There are many tools and materials specifically designed with miniaturists in mind and then there is the equipment that had no idea it was destined for use in making smaller scales.

When you enter this world you will quickly discover two things. Firstly, there are tools out there you never knew existed. Secondly, however long you spend making miniatures someone somewhere still has the capacity to surprise you with a new glue which just happens to look like water or maybe a metal-thingy-with-a-hook or ultra thin wood with a grain that’s perfect for recreating an antique chair.
