THE CYCLE OF ABUSE â WHY IS IT SO HARD TO LEAVE?
THE CYCLE OF ABUSE
Why is it so hard to leave?
Domestic abuse is rarely constant.
Often, there is a cycle:
đ Tension builds
đ Abuse happens
đŹ Apologies and promises follow
â¤ď¸ Things feel good again
đ The cycle repeats
This can make leaving incredibly difficult.
There may be love, hope, shared memories, financial ties, a home, children and a future you believed in.
There may also be fear:
⢠Fear of what will happen if you leave
⢠Fear of being alone
⢠Fear for your children
⢠Fear of not being believed
⢠Fear that things could get worse
That is why asking, âWhy didnât they just leave?â can be harmful.
A better question is:
âWhat made it so difficult to leave?â
Children are affected too
Children do not have to see abuse to feel its impact.
They may hear arguments, sense fear and tension, or feel responsible for keeping the peace.
With safety, support and healthy role models, healing is possible.
â¤ď¸ If you recognise yourself in this cycle:
You are not weak.
You are not to blame.
You are not alone.
At The WHY Event, we believe understanding must come before judgement.
Understanding changes everything.
