✨ BFMAF 2026 kicks off today !! ✨

Forecast says we've got sunshine and a fantastic programme ahead of us this weekend - perfect weather for a little bear hunt round Berwick's lovely local businesses in between screenings ;-)

🎬 We’re delighted to be hosting the 21st Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival later this week! 🎉

Taking place 20–22 March at Maltings Cinema at Berwick Barracks, BFMAF 2026 is an invitation to contemplate, question and take inspiration in the collective environment of the cinema.

Shared meals and plenty of opportunities for conversation and exploration run throughout the programme, which reflects on how we hold and share space across different histories and places.

This year, we will be piloting a dedicated Relaxed Screen at the Town Hall Chamber, which will use the principles of a relaxed screening all weekend. Expect gentle lighting, lower volumes, and freedom to move around, make noise and come and go as you please. 🍃

The Relaxed Screen offers the same film programme to that in the Maltings’ Cinema at the Barracks, at the same time. There will be live captions in the Relaxed Screen for two programmes that are presented live at the Maltings Cinema at the Barracks: Disablement in the Age of Ambivalence and COMMS FAIL (Scratch Performance). We’ve also made some provisions to ensure Relaxed Pass holders can access filmmaker Q&As hosted at the Maltings’ Cinema at the Barracks.

We have plenty of information available on the website if you’re considering getting yourself a Relaxed Festival or Day Pass: https://bfmaf.org/tickets/relaxed-screen/

Age 16-24? LGBTQIA+ / questioning / curious or an ally? Bring your opinions and questions on social media! 📣

Explore how strong q***r voices bounce back, connect and thrive through film and media with this one-day workshop. The law is changing for younger people relating to the proposed under 16 social media ban. We want to hear about your experiences growing up Gen Z.

What's involved?

➡ Use green screen and ‘gonzo’ style journalism – where reporters use their wit and style to put their views and experience across with no compromise!

➡ Experiment with DIY video and make new friends exploring the ideas of ‘real’ and ‘digital’ communities, curiosity, care, and coming together.

➡ No experience is needed. Food and travel support are provided.

➡ Explore how q***r voices bounce back, connect, and thrive through the media and friendship.

Book your free place and come along on Saturday 14 March 2026, 11 - 4pm @ 22 Bridge Street!

📣 Save the date for Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival, taking place 20 - 22 March 2026 !

This summer we’ve been busy kicking off year-round programming at our new venue on 22 Bridge Street and planning for our 21st Edition next March.

After 20 years in The Maltings' Main House and Henry Travers Studio, we’ve also been thinking about how our event might look while our main partner venue undergoes an exciting transformation.

We are immensely fortunate to be able to host the Festival at the Maltings’ temporary Cinema, nestled in the historic Berwick Barracks. Albeit a smaller venue, limitations can prove to be the wellspring of creativity, and we’re taking this opportunity to reimagine the next Festival.

With a smaller programme and lower funding meaning we are working with a smaller team, we’ve made the difficult decision not to open the Call for Entries this year. With a smaller capacity, we’ll be presenting a more intimate and discursive Festival experience. BFMAF 2026 will be an invitation to contemplate, question and take inspiration in the collective environment of the cinema.

We’ll soon be announcing a programme of new cinema and artists’ moving image that is no less ambitious, featuring works that push against the boundaries of form and genre, transcending normative conceptions of what cinema can be with radical, reflective and pluralistic verve.

BFMAF has always been a work-in-progress and we’re excited to continue experimenting with this next iteration, taking this opportunity as a reminder of the essentially communal experience of cinema.

Our next Vertical Screen Commission is now on show in the window of 22 Bridge Street and on the BFMAF website.

“What would it take to convince you that something was real?” by artist Andrew Wilson explores the intersection of coercion, democracy, and trust via a video-collage made entirely from footage painstakingly identified from existing online media platforms.

The Film Library Exhibition of Miners’ Weekend School has been EXTENDED until 13 December 2025. ✨

Filmed in Ashington in 1984 by Amber Films’ Current Affairs Unit, the tapes provide an intimate look into the discussions and strategies of the mining community during a pivotal time in British industrial history.

Amber’s Current Affairs Unit (1983-5) offered an opportunity to examine current issues surrounding working class self-education, exploring the conditions surrounding workers rights and community organising which still hold relevance today.

👉 Drop into 22 Bridge Street on Saturdays 12 - 4pm, where all six parts of the Miners’ Weekend School are free to watch independently.
