Last month the Cygnus Piano Trio introduced us to some Spanish trios by Arbós and Turina. They rounded the evening off with a winning performance of Beethoven’s Archduke trio.

In two weeks’ time we will meet another piano trio but with flute rather than violin. The Marsyas Trio (Helen Vidovich – flute, Valerie Welbanks – cello, Olga Stezhko – piano) will present another little known name, Mélanie Bonis, a French composer of the early C20 who studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Claude Debussy and was taught by César Franck. Her piece Scènes de la Forêt for flute, horn and piano dates from 1928. We will hear an arrangement replacing the horn by cello, of course. Bonis’ contemporary Debussy also features, and Joseph Haydn, Bohuslav Martinů and F***y Mendelssohn complete the line-up.

If your knowledge of 20C Spanish composers fades at de Falla then this concert will add two more names to your list. Your guides will be Javier Montañana – violin, Hannah Lewis – cello, and Cesar Saura - piano. Hannah hails from Watford, but Javier and Cesar come from a bit further south, from Spain, so who better to introduce you to Arbós and Turina.

Enrique Fernández Arbós was a violinist, concertmaster, and a composer, from Madrid. One of his best known works is Tres Piezas Originales en Estilo Español which the Cygnus will play. Joaquín Turina like his friend de Falla came from Andalusia. He studied in Paris and got to know the music of Ravel, with whom he is paired in the Cygnus Trio’s CD ‘Impressions of Iberia’. You will hear the second of his two piano trios. After the flying visit to Spain, we return to the more familiar territory of Beethoven’s Archduke Trio.
