We (Kerry) have been working in the background with Callum and co. to help set this up. You will see my lovely smiling face at the first bonanza so I can give some training on the desk as well as let all the local players play. Can not wait to see everyone in a new venue!!!

🏸 North East Coast Competitions 🏸

Hey everyone!

We’re trying to get a new local circuit up and running to bring more competitive badminton tournaments to the North East of Scotland.

The main goal here is to give players across the region more chances to compete locally, meet other players, and enjoy tournament badminton without having to trek down south or travel hours every weekend.

We’re planning to run adult tournaments across a few different levels:
Copper – Great if you’re new to tournaments or stepping up from casual play.
Bronze – Competitive matches for developing/club players.
Silver – A higher, more challenging level of competition.

Once you join, you can jump into specific sub-groups based on the types and levels of competitions you’d be interested in entering. This will make it way easier for us to plan events, pick the right formats, and get dates on the calendar.
(Quick heads up: as these will be ranking tournaments, you’ll need to be a Badminton Scotland member to enter and get national ranking points).

Whether you’re a regular on the circuit or just thinking about giving your first tournament a go, we’d love to have you involved. The more folk who join the group, the easier it’s going to be to make this happen!

What a weekend!

There were so many bright spots I honestly couldn’t list them all. The emails and messages since the tournament have been lovely, and I’ve really appreciated every single kind word.

At the start of the weekend I announced that we would be keeping an eye on shuttle usage, I think more players than not really took on board when a shuttle genuinely needed changed.

I always give the used shuttles away at the end of the tournament, and a few people even commented that this batch wasn’t as good as normal.

Most matches used between 1–3 shuttles, with only a handful reaching 5.

Once everything was counted, we actually had 4 tubes left over from the shuttles allocated to the tournament.

Rather than keeping them, we’ll be donating those tubes to local badminton clubs to help a little with the ever-increasing costs of running a club.

And on the subject of costs…

Venue hire has increased. Shuttle prices have increased. Tournament fees have increased.

But we have pledged NOT to increase our WCC entry prices.
How can we do that?

Quite simply, because you lot keep turning up!

Our tournament costs are calculated around a specific number of entries. Once we pass that number. Having such fantastic entries means we absorb those rising costs instead of passing them on to players.

We also want WCC tournaments to remain somewhere people can try competitive badminton without it costing a fortune.

Since we stared, we have offered free tournament entry to a small number of players who didn’t yet have Badminton Scotland membership.

Why?

Because asking someone who has never played a tournament before to pay for membership AND tournament entry can feel quite expensive when they don’t even know if they’re going to enjoy it.

By covering their tournament entry, they only had the additional £7 membership cost, giving them the chance to try with a lower financial risk.

The hope, of course, is that they enjoy themselves and enter other tournaments.
Because ultimately that’s what the WCC is about getting people playing, keeping tournaments affordable, supporting clubs where we can and hopefully growing competitive badminton along the way.

Congratulations to all of our winners, what an amazing weekend!

The first-ever Scottish Triple certainly did not disappoint. Across the weekend we had 156 players, 12 events and 222 matches, and it was brilliant to see so many people getting involved.

A huge thank you to every player who entered and helped make the event possible, and to the whole WCC team for all the work behind the scenes. Special thanks to Michael for manning the desk and making me look organised all weekend!

I am absolutely shattered. We got through 31 dozen shuttles, with plenty of matches going to three ends, so it was definitely a tough weekend of badminton, but hopefully a really fun one too.
