21/11/2023
As you might know we have decided to stop organising the Kong Mini Mountain Marathons after the final race of the 2023 series last weekend from Dolgellau in North Wales.
We had a fantastic 9 years organising over 40 races. Visiting different areas all over the UK, putting up what we hope were professional and friendly events, keeping the (mini) Mountain Marathon format alive, and specially putting a smile on new and familiar faces every race.
We are delighted to announce that Andy Thornton has agreed to take over the organisation of the Mini Mountain Marathons and therefore the Series will continue in 2024!
Below an introduction from Andy and we are sure you will hear a lot more from him in the future.
Thank you everybody for your support over the years!
Kind regards,
Alison and Chris Wainwright
Janneke Gorzeman and Erwin van Vroenhoven
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, My name is Andy Thornton and I am delighted to be picking up the reins of the Kong Mini Mountain Marathons from Alison, Erwin, Chris, Janneke and team.
A bit about me: I am based in the North West on the edge of the Peak District (Macclesfield) and have been orienteering and fell running for many years. I love maps, consider myself a good navigator and back in the day I was a half-decent runner (though nowadays something of a plodder!) I am a long term member of Manchester & District Orienteering Club (MDOC) a life member of the Fell Running Association (FRA), and once did a Bob Graham.
More recently I have been focused on event organisation and planning. I am passionate about giving more and younger people the opportunity to "run with maps" in interesting and challenging areas on well-planned courses at well-organised sensibly-priced events.
I intend to continue to put on Mini Mountain Marathons in a similar way and following the same lovely ethos as those put on by the current team - including the post-run refreshments (though that will be a hard act to follow!) I have an existing network of orienteers & fell runners to help support these events, but I am always keen to work with others too, so if you would like to help at a future event, please do let me know (either in the planning, course checking, or on-the-day).
Following hand-over from the current team in the next few weeks, I hope to be announcing the date and venue for 2024 Race 1 early in the new year - watch this space!
In the meantime I am happy to be contacted at [email protected] or on 07751 932749.
Finally, thanks again to Alison, Erwin, Chris & Janneke for all they have done in the past 9 years!
I look forward to meeting you at a MMM race soon. Andy
