Huge thank you to all the people who have helped us over the last 10 years in organising the Kong Mini Mountain Marathons - with reccying, putting out and bringing in checkpoints, cooking soup, baking cakes, helping on the day with registration, parking, serving, kit check, start/finish, etc. - We don’t have photos of everyone but here are a few from over the past 10 years so you can see what was going on behind the scenes. Good luck Andy Thornton with taking over our events!

Some photos from the Dolgellau race over the weekend. Thank you to Tania and Alison for taking these.

As you might know we have decided to stop organising the Kong Mini Mountain Marathons after the final race of the 2023 series last weekend from Dolgellau in North Wales.

We had a fantastic 9 years organising over 40 races. Visiting different areas all over the UK, putting up what we hope were professional and friendly events, keeping the (mini) Mountain Marathon format alive, and specially putting a smile on new and familiar faces every race.

We are delighted to announce that Andy Thornton has agreed to take over the organisation of the Mini Mountain Marathons and therefore the Series will continue in 2024!

Below an introduction from Andy and we are sure you will hear a lot more from him in the future.

Thank you everybody for your support over the years!

Kind regards,

Alison and Chris Wainwright

Janneke Gorzeman and Erwin van Vroenhoven

----------------------------------------------------------------

Hi, My name is Andy Thornton and I am delighted to be picking up the reins of the Kong Mini Mountain Marathons from Alison, Erwin, Chris, Janneke and team.

A bit about me: I am based in the North West on the edge of the Peak District (Macclesfield) and have been orienteering and fell running for many years. I love maps, consider myself a good navigator and back in the day I was a half-decent runner (though nowadays something of a plodder!) I am a long term member of Manchester & District Orienteering Club (MDOC) a life member of the Fell Running Association (FRA), and once did a Bob Graham.

More recently I have been focused on event organisation and planning. I am passionate about giving more and younger people the opportunity to "run with maps" in interesting and challenging areas on well-planned courses at well-organised sensibly-priced events.

I intend to continue to put on Mini Mountain Marathons in a similar way and following the same lovely ethos as those put on by the current team - including the post-run refreshments (though that will be a hard act to follow!) I have an existing network of orienteers & fell runners to help support these events, but I am always keen to work with others too, so if you would like to help at a future event, please do let me know (either in the planning, course checking, or on-the-day).

Following hand-over from the current team in the next few weeks, I hope to be announcing the date and venue for 2024 Race 1 early in the new year - watch this space!
In the meantime I am happy to be contacted at [email protected] or on 07751 932749.

Finally, thanks again to Alison, Erwin, Chris & Janneke for all they have done in the past 9 years!

I look forward to meeting you at a MMM race soon. Andy

Quite a race at the Kong Mini Mountain Marathon Round 3 in Dolgellau in North Wales today! Challenging weather conditions and specially the rivers were a huge obstacle for many people. We had 125 brave people participating today, thank you for coming out! We promise the Cadair Idris area is beautiful and we hope you come back to visit this special part of Wales with sunshine - to proof this one of our recce photos below!! The winner of the 2023 Kong Mini Mountain Marathon series Round 3 was Finlay Grant from Dark Peak fell runners with 435 points. 2nd overall and first lady home was Victoria Thompson from Helm Hill Runners with 391 points. Despite the challenging conditions, it was great to see the happy faces after the race, specially when the home made soup and cakes came in sight. The results are now on the website http://www.minimountainmarathon.co.uk/results.html. This includes the provisional series results. Please let us know by the 1st December if you spot any issues. After that we will send out the Kong Prizes for the 2023 Series. Thank you very much for supporting us over the years!

Looking forward to seeing you all on Sunday. We do still have entries on the day available. Please email us at [email protected]. The weather forecast looks challenging for Sunday so please bring all the required kit and we are recommending to add some additional layers. According to MWIS.org.uk it can get pretty cold on the tops with the windchill.

Message from Tara’s mum - as she is injured is there someone who wants to team up on Sunday for the Dolgellau race with her 16 year old daughter? Please email [email protected].

KONG MINI MOUNTAIN MARATHON 2023 SERIES ROUND 3 ON SUNDAY 19TH NOVEMBER - CADAIR IDRIS. For the final, third round of the 2023 Kong Mini Mountain Marathon Series, we are going to Dolgellau in North Wales to run in the beautiful Cadair Idris National Nature reserve. A beautiful area with an impressive ridge and several lakes with good runnable paths combined with some nice bog trotting with huge tussocks. Registration is from the Dolgellau Institute or Free Library in Dolgellau. Choose between the usual 4 hour score course (you pick your own route and check points) or a challenging linear route. And when you get back to base delicious home made soup and cakes, what can be better. For information and entries see our website www.minimountainmarathon.co.uk

LOCATION ANNOUNCEMENT - KONG MINI MOUNTAIN MARATHON 2023 SERIES ROUND 3 ON SUNDAY 19TH NOVEMBER. For the final, third round of the 2023 Kong Mini Mountain Marathon Series, we are going to Dolgellau in North Wales to run in the beautiful Cadair Idris National Nature reserve. A beautiful area with good runnable paths combined with some nice bog trotting with huge tussocks. We were lucky with our recce and had some beautiful days. The views are stunning with several lakes and the mountain range up to 900m (3,000 ft). Registration is from the Dolgellau Institute or Free Library in Mill street in the middle of the town with the start about 10-15 mins up to road.

This year we have two course options - the usual 4 hour score course where you choose your own route and check points, and the new linear route where you navigate and run to a set of check points chosen by us (c15-20 km, 1000m climbing). And of course don't forget the delicious home made soup and cakes afterwards. For information and entries see our website www.minimountainmarathon.co.uk. We hope to see you in a few weeks.

NEWS: We have decided that after 9 years of organising our races (40 in total) we are going to stop after this year, both with the Scottish Kong Mountain Marathon and the Kong Mini Mountain Marathons. We had an amazing time organising them, but they also cost a lot of energy and time to organise. We hope that someone will take over the organisation so these races and this race format will continue. If you are interested please contact us on [email protected]. Everything is in place to make it (relatively) easy to take over and we will provide support to get you started.
