Throwback to August last year, when Haunted Scouse hosted their first ever Fan Event at the Accrington Old Police Station and Courts.

Only 10 fans were allowed to experience this overnight event.

Some things that they experienced were:

- Words given out by the “Spirit Talker” app being eerily related to the rooms the fans were in.
- Quick spikes in the red on their EMF reader…

Event Planners: Before formally signing off on booking a venue, enquire about the different areas available.

Are there some areas that are hard to access without your guests having to push through heavy doors or cluttered floors?

Are there certain areas which your guests aren’t allowed in, because they’re dangerous/for authorised personnel only? And are your guests aware of these, so they won’t accidentally wander in? Will there be signage to display this well?

Are there any trip hazards?

Keep the above in mind when inspecting the premises you want to hire.

Who is Sergeant Joe Booth?

In the eery corridors of Accrington Courts and the Old Police Station, through which many police officers, guilty criminals and innocent suspects have passed through, many people report seeing a “tall, broad and overbearing figure”.

This figure, which many different people have recorded seeing on different visits, is known by paranormal investigators as “Sgt Joe Booth”. He’s described as a “tormenter presence”.

Have you carried out all these health & safety measures regarding your venue, before hosting your event?

1. Talk to the venue managers in more detail about the specific activities you want to hold at the venue, to be assured of what activities can 100% go ahead safely and what types of insurance still need to be sorted out.
2. Carry out and document a full risk assessment, and get it sent out to your venue managers.
3. Do a full health and safety inspection of the premises with your own eyes, so there’s no risk of unexpected problems happening on the day of the event.

Did you know that Accrington Courts and the Old Police Station are said to have been built on grounds that once belonged to an order of Cistercian monks?

There’s a rumour that 3 monks were murdered on the grounds, by locals who opposed the building of the black abbey.

A young monk was also said to have been burnt to death, by the father of his would-be girlfriend.

These gruesome deaths were said to have happened centuries ago, and yet visitors to Accrington Courts still claim to see shadows and figures of the monks to this day.

What do you think of these tales? Do you believe them?

Have you heard of the ‘masterplan’ to transform Accrington into a ‘vibrant, bustling and proud’ market town?

This includes restoring and repurposing the old Accrington police station into a hospitality venue and/or another attraction, like an escape room.

David Sanderson, deputy lieutenant of Lancashire, has said that it’s important to develop Accrington as it’s “surrounded by beautiful Pennine countryside with outstanding architectural highlights and a rich industrial history.”

Hosting a spooky event?

Confined spaces can be rather spooky, but this isn’t an excuse to cramp your guests together unnecessarily!

Before you book a venue, scout it out with a list of activities that you want to be held on the day of your event, as well as the numbers of guests, performers, and other staff (e.g. caterers) that you expect to be present for each activity.

Make sure there’s enough room (and rooms!) for all of your attendants, and for all your activities and attendants to take place seamlessly. And that includes waiting rooms/break activities - In this weather, you can’t have people waiting outside for a room to be ready for them!

Before Accrington Courts was reopened as a paranormal events venue, it was once a magistrates court and police station.

When it was initially closed in 2016, the last person who left reported hearing footsteps walking in the distance, and a long, painful, cry. However, he locked up “knowing” that the building was empty…

Was this an auditory hallucination, or a paranormal warning from within the building..? What do you think?

It’s been almost 4 years since the old Accrington Courts building started undergoing renovations.

It was given similarly thorough renovations to the old fire station next-door. It used to have “very low use” and roof leakage resulted in damage to its public and court areas.

At the time, council leader Miles Parkinson said “It’s good that these iconic buildings are getting this investment put into them.”
