We fully understand your concerns. The exceptionally high temperatures experienced this year had a significant impact on this edition of the show, and we naturally share your concerns.
However, rescheduling Mineral & Gem is not something that can be decided within a matter of weeks, or even months. This international show involves a very large number of partners, and its schedule is planned several years in advance.
In addition to our own organisational requirements, we must take many other constraints into account. These include major international trade shows, particularly in Asia, which are attended by a significant number of our exhibitors; shipping times for goods transported to Europe; the availability of public and private venues; public contracts already awarded for major services such as marquees and security; and the coordination of more than 800 volunteers from local associations.
Several of these associations rely in particular on the involvement of young volunteers. Moving the event to May would mean holding it during the school term, with no guarantee that the necessary number of volunteers would be available. We also work in partnership with schools, which means that their academic calendar must be taken into consideration.
It is also important to bear in mind that changing the time of year would not necessarily prevent this type of situation. This year, France experienced an exceptional spell of hot weather as early as the end of May, followed by the hottest June ever recorded. Periods of extreme heat are unfortunately occurring earlier and becoming increasingly difficult to predict. May can also bring highly variable weather conditions, ranging from heatwaves to heavy rain and thunderstorms.
We are therefore unable to predict weather conditions several months in advance or guarantee that changing the dates would provide better conditions.
This does not mean, however, that we are remaining inactive. A thorough review of this year’s event will be carried out with all stakeholders. No decisions have been made at this stage, but several possible measures will be considered, including potential adjustments to opening hours, in order to respond more effectively to periods of extreme heat while maintaining the quality of the event, ensuring suitable conditions for visitors and safeguarding everyone’s working conditions.
