The Salon du dessin is an international fair dedicated to drawings and attended by the world’s leading specialists in works on paper. The Salon du dessin runs at the Palais Brongniart in Paris every year in March. Created in 1991 by a small group of art dealers, the fair is now a leader in its field. A frontrunner for many reasons, the fair possesses all the ingredients of a success story: the exceptional quality of the works selected by the exhibitors, its undeniable commercial dynamism, its capacity to attract the most important collectors and curators from around the world and its ability to gather together institutions to celebrate drawings.

In Paris now — Mes Chers Amis at the Fondation Custodia. 🖊️

The Fondation Custodia - Frits Lugt Collection — one of the great drawing collections in the world, and a regular and valued presence at the Salon du Dessin — has opened an exhibition of rare intimacy.

Mes Chers Amis. Drawings in the Collections of 19th-Century French Artists explores a practice as old as art itself: artists collecting the work of their friends, their masters, their peers. Out of friendship, admiration, or loyalty, these drawings — intimate and personal objects — circulated between studios, were gifted, exchanged, and kept with care. The exhibition reconstructs networks and collections that have not been seen together since their dispersal more than a century ago.

Two figures form the core: Ingres and Delacroix. But the constellations around them are equally compelling. Géricault's left hand, drawn by himself in black and red chalk around 1823–24, once owned by Pierre-François Lehoux. Delacroix's portrait of Frédéric Chopin in graphite and white chalk, kept by his cousin Léon Riesener. A Delacroix bouquet of flowers in black crayon, watercolour and pastel on grey-blue paper — owned by Cézanne. Manet's pastel portrait of his wife on a blue sofa — kept by Degas. Daumier's The Connoisseur, in the hands of Jules Dupré. A Caspar David Friedrich watercolour once in the collection of the sculptor David d'Angers.

Nearly 100 works are on display with exceptional loans from the Musée du Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay and the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. A catalogue published by Paul Holberton Publishing.

À Paris — Mes Chers Amis à la Fondation Custodia. 🖊️

When travelling to Berlin — see Daniel Chodowiecki at the Kupferstichkabinett. 🖊️

If you have never heard of Daniel Chodowiecki (1726–1801), you are in good company — and in for a discovery. In late 18th-century Berlin, he was a superstar: the most celebrated, most reproduced and most beloved draughtsman and etcher of the German Enlightenment, whose images of daily life, portraiture and moral drama reached every literate household in Europe through illustrated almanacs and books.

Born in Danzig of Polish-German origin, Chodowiecki captured Enlightenment Berlin with the eye of a journalist and the hand of a master. Over 2,000 etchings. Countless drawings. Moses Mendelssohn in red chalk. The merchant class at their desks and dinner tables. And then — the work that changed everything.

In 1762, a Protestant merchant named Jean Calas was wrongfully executed in Toulouse, accused of killing his son to prevent his conversion to Catholicism. Voltaire took up the cause. Europe was outraged. And Chodowiecki — a Protestant himself, in a Prussia shaped by religious tolerance under Frederick the Great — responded in the only language he knew perfectly: drawing. His painting, preparatory sketches and etchings of Jean Calas bidding farewell to his family are among the most quietly devastating images of the Enlightenment. One extraordinary life.

Adolph Menzel is an artist well represented at the Salon du Dessin. His exhibition in Warsaw, spanning a career of extraordinary range and discipline across paintings, drawings and prints, is well worth the journey.

Menzel (1815–1905) was never without a sketchbook. It is said he could draw equally well with either hand. The retrospective held at the Nationalgalerie in Berlin a few weeks after his death in 1905 included more than 6,400 drawings, almost 300 watercolours, 77 sketchbooks, 129 paintings and 250 prints. In his pencil drawings, composition mattered less than observation: the page was a field of inquiry, not a stage. From the 1860s onwards, gouache became increasingly central to his practice — a medium he eventually preferred to oil, declaring after 1887 that gouache was better suited to capturing certain natural effects. In his final decade, he returned to pencil and stump alone, the drawings acquiring a hazy, atmospheric quality, figures emerging as if from smoke.

Nothing escaped his attention: a military ceremony and an unmade bed, a royal banquet and a bricklayer on scaffolding, the dead coat of General Moltke, a macaw in a children’s album. For Menzel, looking was thinking.

The National Museum in Warsaw holds over 200 prints and 45 drawings by the artist — most originating from pre-war German collections. The exhibition, organised in collaboration with the Alte Nationalgalerie and the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin, addresses this history directly and with transparency.

Eva Gonzalès (1847–1883) was, in her own time, a recognised painter and pastellist who exhibited regularly at the Salon and received serious critical attention — particularly for her work in pastel, which she had learned from Charles Chaplin before she ever encountered Manet. That she became, in posterity, known primarily for being his only pupil, is one of the more curious reversals in the history of Impressionism.

Manet painted her in 1870 — in a white dress unsuited to work at an easel — and Berthe Morisot, writing to her sister, was cutting: "Manet lectures me and holds up that eternal Miss Gonzalès as a model... Meanwhile, he does her portrait again for the twentieth time; she poses every day, and in the evening the head is washed off with black soap. That is certainly encouraging!" That portrait, and that letter, have shaped her image more than her canvases and pastels.

Throughout the 1870s and early 1880s Gonzalès made pastel increasingly central to her practice, the period in which her style fully asserted itself. Some scholars hold that it was she who led Manet towards his own late pastels. Her sister Jeanne, her near-exclusive model, inhabits the work under successive identities. The motif of the woman at her toilette — recurring, deliberate — opens a private world that repays close attention.

Although a contemporary of Mary Cassatt and Berthe Morisot, with whom she is often associated, Eva Gonzalès had never been the subject of a major retrospective, either in France or internationally. Until now.

In Dresden — see In a New Light at the Kupferstich-Kabinett. 🖊️

What happens when a team of scholars spends years looking — closely — at 700 16th-century Italian drawings? Names emerge from anonymity. Fragments find their other half. Hidden underdrawings surface. A sheet long filed under 'unknown' turns out to be by a hand the museum never knew it held.

On view are 25 drawings, selected from the cataloguing project, that have transformed the Dresden Kupferstich-Kabinett's understanding of its own collection. Each sheet comes with a story that was not there before.

Among the works: vessel designs by Jacopo Palma il Giovane from the 1580s–90s; two sheets by the Bologna-born Giovanni Francesco Bezzi, called Nosadella — an Angel of the Annunciation and an attributed striding female figure from the third quarter of the 16th century; and a sheet depicting Saints Catherine of Alexandria and Catherine of Siena with Ferdinand I of Naples, attributed to Dirck Hendricksz, the Dutch-born painter who became Teodoro d'Errico in Naples.

This is scholarship at its best: it restores drawings to their full identity. And it is exactly the kind of sustained, collaborative attention that the Salon du Dessin exists to celebrate.

Masterdrawings at FINE ARTS PARIS this weekend. 🖊️

Among the exhibitors at Fine Arts Paris — organised by the AEC, the same organisation behind the Salon du Dessin — is the Musée du Grand Siècle, Saint-Cloud.

The Musée du Grand Siècle was born from the donation by Pierre Rosenberg — honorary president of the Louvre, member of the Académie française, and a longstanding friend of the Salon du Dessin — of his entire personal collection to the Département des Hauts-de-Seine: 694 paintings, some 3,500 drawings, and a library of 50,000 volumes, now housed in the former Caserne Sully in Saint-Cloud. The museum is dedicated to 17th-century French art and to the art of collecting, with a research centre named after Nicolas Poussin.

On their stand at Fine Arts Paris: a black chalk drawing on cream paper by Simon Vouet (1590–1649), c. 1648–1649 — a preparatory study for Apollo and the Serpent Python, one of twelve mythological paintings commissioned for the lower gallery of the Hôtel Séguier. The cycle celebrated allegorically the reign of Louis XIII and Richelieu's ministry. The paintings were lost when the Hôtel Séguier was destroyed; they survive today only through engravings made by Michel Dorigny in 1651. The drawing was donated to the museum by Pierre Rosenberg in 2020.

When in Utrecht — see Gerard van Honthorst. Today is the last day. 🖊️

Gerard van Honthorst – Different to Rembrandt runs until today, 13 September 2026 at the Centraal Museum Utrecht — the first major retrospective ever devoted to this Utrecht-born painter, presented in the city where he was born, married and died.

Honthorst (1592–1656) left for Rome as a young man, where he made his name with dramatically lit nocturnal scenes that earned him the nickname Gherardo delle Notti — Gerard of the Nights. As one of the very few non-Italian artists to receive prestigious commissions for altarpieces, he attracted the most influential collectors of his time, from the Medici to the British Royal family. Back in Utrecht from 1620, he turned to portraiture, pastoral scenes and the portrait historié, becoming the most successful Dutch painter of his generation — a reputation subsequently overshadowed by Rembrandt.

Drawing was central to his formation. His teacher Abraham Bloemaert was one of the founders of the Utrecht drawing school. In Rome, Honthorst attended the accademie del Vivo — life drawing sessions held in the workshops of masters and the homes of collectors. Only five drawings from his Roman period are known. A further fifty were discovered ten years ago from his later years as a court painter in The Hague — doubling the total known corpus overnight.

The exhibition brings together around 60 paintings and 30 drawings from the Louvre, the British Royal Collection, the Galleria Borghese and private collections. The drawings — preparatory studies and compositional pensieri — offer a rare insight into a working practice that has received too little scholarly attention.

Aujourd’hui à Utrecht — allez voir Gerard van Honthorst. Dernier jour. 🖊️

The drawing world has lost Peter Schatborn, a few weeks after his ninetieth birthday. 🖊️

Peter Schatborn devoted his career to the study of Dutch drawings, above all those of Rembrandt and his circle. As head of the Rijksprentenkabinet at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, guest scholar at theGetty Research Institute, and curator at the Fondation Custodia - Frits Lugt Collection and The Frick Collection, he was for decades the pre-eminent authority on 17th-century Dutch draughtsmanship. His catalogue raisonné of Rembrandt’s drawings and etchings, co-authored with Erik Hinterding and published by Taschen in 2019, stands as the definitive work on the subject. His later book, Rembrandt and his Contemporaries: Old Drawings, New Names, is a masterwork of connoisseurship — a lifetime of looking distilled into attributions that have reshaped our understanding of the school.

For some years he was an expert for the Salon du Dessin, where his presence and his eye were greatly valued.

Our condolences to his family and to his colleagues, in particular at the Fondation Custodia and the Rijksmuseum.

The drawing had previously been attributed to Jan van Vliet and Salomon Koninck. However, the work is now considered to be by Rembrandt for stylistic reasons by Peter Schatborn. It belongs to a small group of drawn portraits from the end of the 1630s that are all very similar.

When travelling to Aix-en-Provence — see Toulouse-Lautrec. 🖊️

Toulouse-Lautrec: Créateur d’icônes runs until 4 October 2026 at the Caumont-Centre d’Art — nearly a hundred works from the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec, the Musée d'Orsay, the Musée Carnavalet - Histoire de Paris and private collections. Curated by Gilles Genty and F***y Girard, director of the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec.

Before the posters, there was the line. Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901) drew from the age of six, all his life, faster and more accurately than almost anyone of his generation. His draughtsmanship — swift, perceptive, capable of capturing a silhouette or a psychological state in a few strokes — is what made his posters revolutionary. For him, lithography was drawing on a larger scale: the same instinct, the same conciseness, the same unwavering gaze upon the figures of Belle Époque Paris. La Goulue, Jane Avril and Aristide Bruant were captured on paper with unerring lines — and turned into icons.

Quand vous voyagez à Aix-en-Provence — allez voir Toulouse-Lautrec. 🖊️
