I was shocked and deeply saddened to receive the news about the passing away of Stephen Kovacevich, one of the greatest pianists of our time. Stephen was a great influence on me as a pianist growing up listening to his concerts and recordings, later receiving masterclasses from him as a student and eventually sharing stage together in various festivals and finally having the great honor as an artistic director of Les Coups de Coeur a Chantilly to invite him from our very first inauguration edition in 2021 celebrating the 80th birthday of Martha Argerich with whom he shared a special relationship on and off the stage for which he came back regularly after to perform in the festival and give masterclasses to the students of the conservatory of Chantilly.
He was aw inspiring both in his performances with profound interpretations with endless curiosity and true and contagious passion for music as well as a wonderful pedagogue giving masterclasses with such revealing insights inspiring generations of pianists.
He will be dearly missed as a musician, a unique personality and as a friend... his tremendous legacy will stay with us for generations to come.
