EUta Etsimässä tapahtumaa vietetään 9.5. kansainvälisenä Eurooppa-päivänä. M***a mitä Eurooppa-päivä tarkoittaa ja mistä se on saanut alkunsa?
Mennään päivään 9.5.1950. Toisen maailmansodan päättymisestä on viisi vuotta, ja Euroopan eri maiden hallitukset halusivat estää uuden sodan syttymisen. Tämän takia Ranskan silloinen ulkoministeri Robert Schuman esitti Schumanin julistuksen, jossa hän ehdotti Euroopan hiili- ja teräsyhteisön perustamista Saksan ja Ranskan yhdentymisen edistämiseksi. Heti seuraavana vuonna yhteisö saatiin perustettua kuuden eri maan kesken. Yhteisö on kasvanut ajan saatossa ja nykyään kutsumme sitä Euroopan Unioniksi, jonka syntymäpäivää vietetään 9.5.
Schumanin julistus oli siis merkittävä rauhanaloitus, joka yhdisti Eurooppaa ja toi yhtenäisyyden tunteen maiden välille.

Looking for EU is an event celebrated on May 9, International Europe Day. But what does Europe Day mean, and where does it originate?
Let’s go back to May 9, 1950. Five years had passed since the end of the Second World War, and governments across Europe wanted to prevent another war from breaking out. For this reason, the then French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman presented the Schuman Declaration, in which he proposed the establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community to promote integration between Germany and France. Already the following year, the community was founded by six countries. Over time, the community has grown, and today we call it the European Union, whose birthday is celebrated on May 9.
The Schuman Declaration was therefore a significant peace initiative that united Europe and created a sense of unity between nations.
