Pixelache Helsinki

Pixelache Helsinki Pixelache Helsinki is a transdisciplinary platform for emerging art, design, research and activism.

The name of Pixelache was found in an article that predicted new words which we would need in future. The word ‘pixelache’ (similar to ‘headache’) was supposed to describe the feeling that results from an overdose of digital media content. This overdose can happen easily if the content is too monotonic – which is the case if standards, formats, tools and design principles converge to a narrow set

of options. Later interpretations could be an ‘ache’ of digital influence in everyday life, and an ‘ache’ to re-engage with non-digital interfaces and systems. The organisation Pixleache Helsinki, run by the Finnish association Piknik Frequency ry, develops every year projects related to art, design, activism, and open knowledge. During the year 2018 Pixelache wants to focus on the theme of Local and Decentralised governance. Since 2002, Pixelache Helsinki has been exploring new cultural production models with sustainability as the core goal, and has invested significant resources to develop year-round local and regional activities. During 15 years Pixelache has designed and produced in Southern Finland and around the Gulf of Finland not less than 500 public events, including lectures, workshops, unconferences, expeditions, a yearly festival, exhibitions and projects; Pixelache has focused on educational purposes by emphasizing skill-sharing, peer-learning, learning by doing and Do it Yourself developing into Do it With Others (DIWO), towards social and community learning and capacity building. Reaching out for transdisciplinary approach and the participation of different ages, Pixelache works with an expanding network in the Baltic area, Scandinavia, Europe, Africa and South America.

Build a larger table #3 with Kiila

Friday 28th of December from 7:30 pm onwards (EEST time zone)

Pixelache in collaboration with Station of Commons will organise a series of dinners inviting diverse cultural and artistic collectives at Villa Eläintarha.

For December’s gathering and chapter 3 of the series, we will invite Kiila, Finland’s longest-running left-wing, writers’ and artists’ organization.

Build a larger table is a project which aims to gather in a relaxed environment, with food and drinks to hold conversations and share recipes on social sustainability and experiences on working together.

These talks will be broadcasted and shared to the public domain through the Station of Commons website. An edited podcast will be accessible  later on Pixelache website and Soundcloud.

The title Build a larger table comes from an apocryphal quote that says “when you have more than you need build a larger table not a taller fence”.The concept resonated with the intentions of this project, where we wanted to share a moment of togetherness and joy around food, in order to have conversations with collectives that have been shaping the cultural context in Helsinki for a long time.

The dinner conversation live streaming will be available on Station of Commons website, Friday 28th of December from 7:30 pm onwards (EEST time zone)

Join us on this series and get a glimpse on dynamics and strategies for surviving as collectives!

Life in the Ruins

December 13th from 14-15:45
Veeran Verstas, Lossikuja 6, (Tuira), Oulu.

Jiyoun Lee and Arlene Tucker’s Contamination Lab hosts Georgie Goater’s workshop ‘life in the ruins’, a task-based exploration of movement and text. During the workshop we will attune our bodily senses and playfully engage with contamination as collaboration, through the lens of life in the ruins and the art of encountering the unexpected. An embodied matrix of movement and text-based tasks, relational scores, and reflection facilitates a safer playground for bodymind inquiry, with an invitation to experiment, be present with the emergent, and, hopefully, ask more questions.

Register by emailing [email protected].

When & Where: Saturday, December 13th from 14-15:45, Veeran Verstas, Lossikuja 6, (Tuira), Oulu.

Accessibility: The workshop is open to all interested, however, unfortunately, there is no sign-language interpreter. For further inquiries please get in touch.

For more information, go to Arlene's website: https://www.arlenetucker.net/news/life-in-the-ruins-with-georgie-goater

This workshop is funded by Arts Council Korea 한국문화예술위원회. Bioart Society provides advisory support to Contamination Lab. Veeran Verstas provides the space and community outreach.

NEW WEBSITE ANNOUNCEMENT
Digital Mortality

In 2025, Pixelache Helsinki commissioned a new artwork from Antti Silventoinen and Arttu Manninen. The piece called Digital Mortality took life as a responsive webpage continuously changing, morphing and composting data, while information is updated on its body. The webpage will host digital artworks on its main page, and we will soon publish the modalities to participate. You can consult our 20-year digital archive at pixelache.ac while our new page is pixelache.com .

We’ve grown comfortable with the illusion of digital permanence—that there are no real consequences in digital spaces. Files don’t rot. Websites don’t age. Pixels don’t fade like photographs left in sunlight.

But what if they did?

The Digital Mortality artwork exists as a study on digital entropy—a living contradiction to our assumptions on the almost eternal nature of online spaces. Built to respond, erode, programmed to forget, designed to die.

The degradation process remains largely invisible for now. Like a slow poison or cellular ageing, the structures of decay are present but almost invisible. Built to resist usage.

Every interaction you make contributes to this process of compounding effects—a slight degradation and consequence that will unfold over the years. The site feels every user, not as data to be analysed, but as accumulated wear on its digital fabric.

Over the course of the pages lifespan, the decay will become more and more visible and visceral. This renders the site increasingly unstable as it ages toward its inevitable death.

After collapse comes dormancy. After dormancy, rebirth. The cycle continues, powered by the very interactions that destroyed what came before.

This art study is about making visible the hidden costs of our digital consumption.
