Since the beginning of its tourism surge in the late 1950s, Torremolinos has been a safe haven for Europe's gay and lesbian holiday makers. Even under Franco, while gay people elsewhere in Spain were being brutalized, imprisoned and executed, the value of the solid currencies that the so called vacationing "deviants" brought into Spain's faltering economy trumped whatever personal feelings Franco had about same sex relationships and kept Torremolinos a gay Mecca, long before the word "gay" evolved into common usage. Today, gay life in Torremolinos centres around the Nogalera complex in the very centre of town where there is a gay bar to suit just about every taste one can imagine. The complex itself is very mixed, with gay and family restaurants, bars and shops, all jumbled together, making for a nice, comfortable ambiance. Given the "macho" reputation of Spanish culture, many first-time LGBTQ visitors are surprised to discover the general indifference of the locals to sexual orientation. Torremolinos is an LGTBIQ+ oasis in Spain and one of the largest in Europe. Because the 'boom' of gay tourism in Torremolinos crosses borders and in this summer of the pandemic, with a group immunized in a very high percentage ("here we have caught almost all the covid, although mild"), the pioneer municipality of the Costa del Sol returns to claim itself as a place of freedom. This is a place where no one looks at whether two people of the same sex go hand in hand down the street or kiss. And where the Rainbow Flag flies more than any other, and where all Gay tribes can live peacefully. Links:

Soon Torremolinos celebrates it's Patron Saint, Michael the Archangel.
The Festivities begin on September 20th with the traditional Pilgrimage and continue with the San Miguel Fair, which will take place from Friday, September 25th to Tuesday, September 29th.
