JLR Madrid Commentaries No 10, ‘La Guitarra’, Spain's national instrument.
I conclude my series of articles on Madrid (now 30,000+ reads) with a piece dedicated to Spain’s national instrument, the Guitar.
The six-stringed Spanish guitar is a universal and omni-present musical instrument that originated in the Iberian peninsula, transitioning from the Vihuela to the form that is known today. Much credit is due to the Almerían guitar-maker, Antonio Torres, who was almost single-handedly responsible for the familiar ‘8’ shape we now associate with the modern Spanish classical guitar. The other great name of the ancient guitar-making world is that of Francesco Sanguino.
I am proud and honoured to have grown up as a member of the family of arguably Spain’s greatest modern-day Guitarmaker, Don José Romanillos, Luthier and Historian. My father. His guitars have been played by some of the all-time greats, including Julian Bream, John Williams and Paco Peña. A guitar museum, dedicated to my father, is now to be found in the medieval town of Sigüenza, Guadalajara.
He passed away over a year ago, but his legacy will continue through his books and magnificent creations, and we will be honouring his memory through the next international guitar and music festival, GUITARRA II, 17-21 July 2024. Sigüenza, Spain.
