88 MPH brings his rap background into Schranz on Another Drug, his new EP for Systolic💉🩸
He works out of Windsor, Ontario, right across the river from Detroit — and before hard techno, he spent years as a battle rapper and hip hop producer. That history is what separates these three tracks from the rest of the current schranz wave.
The plan for this EP didn’t survive contact with the studio. What replaced the missing piece is Hoodlums, the most personal track he’s written for a dance record. “I wrote the lyrics for Hoodlums with the sole purpose of creating a cool music video in Detroit,” he says. “Living on the border of Detroit, I’ll be shooting footage with some of my rap friends in the city. The goal was to bring Schranz to the hood and create something that felt authentic to both worlds.”
The vocals carry as much weight as the kicks throughout. “The solo tracks I make always start with the vocal idea first,” he explains. “Even if it’s just a couple of words or a vintage news clip, I always build around that vocal before the drop.” On the two collaborations, he works differently: “I write until I reach a point where I either feel I’ve hit a wall or genuinely believe someone else’s input will help make the track the best it can be.”
Two of the three tracks are exactly that. The title track features DREY, the Madrid producer who also runs A&R at Systolic. These Beats is a joint production with Instead of Seven — the two have worked together before.
