What a great 40th wcciJAM festival we had this year! We’re feeling so grateful for all your dancing, awareness, listening, and speaking up. Thank you for sharing skills and perspectives, and for helping us to practice contact improvisation in community.

wcciJAM Core Organizer Feature: Andy Wolodarski Lundberg

Bio:
Andy is the manager of The Berkeley Finnish Hall (finnishhall.org) where he spends his time dancing the depths of site management, budgets, curation, organizing work exchangers and generally all things behind the scenes which includes the day to day joy of raising a 8 year old… He takes a deep interest in politics, history, place, and such things that bring joy and wonder to juxtapositions otherwise seen and felt.

wcciJAM Core Organizer Feature: Megan Lowe /

Bio:
Megan Lowe (she/they) is a dancer, choreographer, performer, aerialist, singer-songwriter, filmmaker, teacher, and administrator of Chinese and Irish descent, making dance art in the San Francisco Bay Area, situated on unceded Ramaytush Ohlone land. Through Megan Lowe Dances, she creates courageous multidisciplinary dance works, rooted in care, that transform spaces with dynamic place-making, playful partner-work, and daring aerial/vertical dance. Megan is a recipient of 2 Izzie Awards, and her recent choreographies have been seen at YBCA, Legion of Honor, ODC, Fort Mason, and de Young, as well as in SF Aerial Arts Festival, USAAF, CAAMFest, SF Trolley Dances, and on KQED Live. Megan has performed with Flyaway Productions, Dance Brigade, Lenora Lee Dance, Scott Wells & Dancers, and more. She is a teaching artist for Joe Goode Performance Group, BANDALOOP, Flyaway, and her alma mater Theater, Dance, & Performance Studies at UC Berkeley, where she works as the Program Associate. She regularly teaches contact improvisation, vertical dance, site-specific dance, and contemporary dance for organizations, schools, universities, and dance festivals around the Bay Area and California, and has also taught in Greece, Singapore, Ireland, and Japan. Megan has been a part of the wcciJAM team since 2016. ~ MeganLoweDances.com

Bio:
Miriam is a reluctant administrator, an experimental performance maker, an inveterate improvisor. A teacher, organizer, mom, and roamer of inner and outer landscapes, she is also currently the director of the arts nonprofit Sense Object, and co-manager of the Berkeley Finnish Hall.

Rebecca Bryant will facilitate performance scores the evening of July 3!

Bio:
Rebecca Bryant blurs the lines that separate disciplines and addresses current social phenomena in their danceworks and teaching. Bryant’s expertise in ensemble and contact improvisation has led them to teach workshops in New York, Toronto, Stockholm, Oslo, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Bogota, San Salvador, and at the LA Improvisational Dance Festival, Texas Dance Improvisation Festival, Contact Festival Freiburg, TransContact Festival (Romania), Kontakt Budapest Festival, and at over 25 universities across the US. Bryant teaches at CSU Long Beach and has performed their multimedia danceworks in 27 US states and 13 countries across Europe and North/Central/South America.

Offering Description: BIPOC Only Jam

This jam is a space for People of Color (POC) dancers, including those who identify as Black, Brown, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, Pacific Islander, or multiracial with partial non-European ancestry.

The jam exists to support those who share experiences shaped by racism, colonialism, and systems of white supremacy. If you are unsure whether this space is intended for you, please speak with the jam hosts. White-identified participants and those of entirely European ancestry are encouraged to contact the organizers with any questions.

With gratitude to Inertia DeWitt and Olivia Treviño of the Bay Area POC CI Jam for helping articulate these guidelines.

Bio:
Karin Moriarty is a Chilean-born dancer, choreographer, and teacher who immigrated to the United States in the late 1970s and earned a degree in Dramatic Arts Dance from the University of California, Berkeley. She has performed with numerous Bay Area artists and trained extensively in Contact Improvisation. Her choreography often draws from personal experience and human rights themes, including In Mourning, a work inspired by the loss of her brother during Chile’s 1973 military coup. Karin continues to teach modern dance and Contact Improvisation locally and internationally, serves as a guest artist at Stanford University, and has been a longtime teacher and organizer within the Contact Improvisation community. She is currently collaborating with Andrew Suseno and Moving Rasa.

Class Description: Contact Improvisation & the Four Core Energies of Tai Chi

The class guides participants through a set of experiments exploring the four core energies of Tai Chi: Peng, Lu, Ji, and An. Through those playful exercises, we investigate how these energies are sensed, exchanged, and communicated, cultivating shared relational states through listening and attention. Participants discover the relationship between Tai Chi principles and Contact Improvisation, including tone, structure, redirection, yield, weight exchange, timing, and space. The practice emphasizes curiosity, collaboration, and embodied dialogue, grounded in collective care and accountability.

Dai & Wei have practiced Tai Chi for over a decade and teach Contact Improvisation at ODC Dance Commons in San Francisco. They are the directors of Kinetech Arts, where they explore the intersection of dance, science, and technology. Since founding Kinetech Arts in 2013, they have been building bridges among diverse communities throughout the Bay Area.

Class Description: Receptive, Dynamic Hands: Listening in, offering more

Our hands hold a high concentration of nerves, they are an acutely receptive, creative and discerning part of our body. And all too often they get avoided, limiting possibility in contact improvisation. This class explores ways to bring them into a contact duet, creating space for investigation rather than limiting possibility, imposing will or trapping our partner. We will explore the way the hands listen, offer responsive cues, create new possibility for tracking and keeping the dance traveling through space. We will delight in the freedom of clear emergent impulses and playful creative touch that connects into the fascia. We will investigate how specific placement of the hands allows for deep sensing into the ground and how the hands can unweight parts of the body, creating lighter more agile dances. Warm-ups will include specific hand orientations that offer the most possibility for sequential ripples of impulse, clear total body connection, and how to connect with the hands from one's center and ground.

Bio:
Utam Moses is a somatic explorer and loves sharing dance as a space for the many parts of the self to show up. She currently teaches at Indiana University Bloomington and Windfall Dancers. Her work investigates movement as a catalyst for transformation, shifting states, and emergent community. She is passionate about integrating play, embodied wonder, experimental theater and contemplation into her dance explorations. Utam received her B.A. in Contemporary Dance (IU) and her M.A. in Performance Studies from Tisch (NYU).
