"far og jeg/ og vores europatænder/ og min hud/ er et underligt lyshav", lyder et digt i Nana Fatous roste debutdigtsamling 'Toubab', der handler om at være en familie på tværs af kontinenter, om sorg, økonomisk ulighed, længsel og skyldfølelse.
Digtsamlingens jeg besøger med sin far familien i Tallinding i Gambia, hvor hun forsøger at navigere i sproget, blikkene og forventningerne til hende som privilegeret gæst. Hun savner sin lillebror, som hun ikke længere har kontakt til, og at kunne dele oplevelsen af at være “halv”, som de kalder hende, både fremmed og hjemme.

'Toubab' is Nana Fatou's debut collection, published this spring. It explores what it means to be a family spread across continents, while grappling with grief, economic inequality, guilt and longing. The poems' first-person narrator visits her family in Tallinding, Gambia, with her father, where she struggles to navigate the language, the stares and the expectations placed on her as a privileged guest. She misses her little brother, with whom she has lost contact, and the shared experience of being "half", as they call her, at once a foreigner and at home.
