IM Tor Fredrik Kaasen is the new Kronborg Master 2026 after securing victory with 5½ points in a strong field.

🇳🇴 A perfect story on Norway’s National Day!

And what a narrative it could have been, with a win in the final round against his fellow Norwegian FM Nicolai Maxime Ostensen, Tor would have claimed his final GM norm and the Grandmaster title on May 17th. It doesn’t get more poetic than that.

It wasn’t meant to be this time, but Tor has been incredibly close before. Just two years ago, he missed out on a GM norm by the narrowest of margins only half a point.

Now, he finally takes top spot at Kronborg, and does so in style. Congratulations, Tor, on a fantastic performance and a well-deserved title.

Six rounds down and the battle is heating up in the top groups at Kronborg Chess Open 2026.

In the Grandmaster group, IM Floryan Eugene takes the lead with 4 points, closely followed by IM Tor Fredrik Kaasen and IM Jakob Leon Pajeken on 4 and 3½ points. With world-class names like GM Jonny Hector, GM Vitaly Kunin and GM Boris Chatalbashev still within striking distance, everything is wide open going into the final three rounds.

The International Master group is incredibly tight, with FM August Jalving leading on 4 points. Just half a point behind, a strong pack including IM Axel Falkevall, IM Dagur Ragnarsson and IM Arthur Lucas are all fighting for the top spot. Every round now feels like a final.

In the WIM group, FM Mikkel Manosri Jacobsen is dominating with an impressive 5½ out of 6. IM Vincent Colin follows on 5 points, while IM Bengt Lindberg stays in contention with 4½. A thrilling finish is guaranteed as the field chases the leader.

What a magical moment at Kronborg Chess Open!

Yesterday we were treated to a truly special visit, as a curious little deer, quickly nicknamed “Bambi”, and her mother stopped by to take in the atmosphere of the tournament. A beautiful reminder that we are playing not only world class chess, but doing so in the heart of nature.

Set in the stunning surroundings of Comwell Borupgaard in Snekkersten, Kronborg Chess Open offers a unique blend of intense competition and peaceful scenery. It is not every day that spectators from the nearby forest drop in to watch the games.

Chess, nature and unforgettable moments all come together here.

Denmark’s largest international chess tournament is officially underway. ♟️

Today marks the start of this year’s Kronborg Chess Open, which for the first time features three Master groups GM IM and WIM. All three groups play nine rounds, giving players the opportunity to compete for norms.

In the top group, FM Vitus Medhus is the only Danish player, but the field still has a strong Danish connection. GM Boris Chatalbashev represents Denmark, and the swedish Grandmaster GM Jonny Hector, who lives in Helsingør and is a friend of Helsingør Chess Club, also takes part in the tournament.

The event is played at Comwell Borupgaard in Snekkersten from today until Sunday May 17. Rounds start at 10:00 and 15:00, except on Sunday when only one round is played.

Everyone is welcome to stop by and experience top level international chess.

The games can also be followed live with delay on Chess.com.

Due to a very late withdrawal, Kronborg Chess Open is urgently looking for an International Master or Grandmaster to fill the final spot in our International Master Group.

The tournament starts this Wednesday, 13 May, so quick confirmation is essential.
