Edition Wilhelm Hansen

Edition Wilhelm Hansen *Making Music Better* | Largest Music Publisher in the Nordics | Leading Scandinavian Composers | Classical profile | Part of Wise Music Group Ratkje.

Tonight at Berwaldhallen, Esa-Pekka Salonen’s praised Cello Concerto is brought centre stage for his sixth and final part as Artist in Residence with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra 🎶

In the first of two performances, Susanna Mälkki conducts the 36-minute long concerto, known for its intense virtuosity and expressive depth. In Salonen's own words, it begins with 'a simple thought emerging out of a complex landscape. Almost like consciousness developing from clouds of dust.'

The acclaimed cellist Nicolas Altstaedt presents his version as soloist which can also be experienced on the Alpha Classics release from 2022.

"Only few people ever experience the Ferguson reflex, and they are all women. But those who do are sure to remember its magical strength for ever. I described that enormous surge to my husband as the rapids of life I had to shoot – as a precipice over which I was pushed; and in the process I realised how little I knew about the strength of the human body.
This physical command, also known as the foetal ejection reflex and performed without conscious thought, shot our son out of my womb and into our arms in the space of two minutes. 'The Rapids of Life' is a work about that paramount moment, about a female’s instinctive birth-giving and a little child of nature who opens his eyes for the first time." - Outi Tarkiainen

Outi Tarkiainen 's orchestral work 'The Rapids of Life' recieves country premieres in Taipei and Tokyo the next weeks both times conducted by Pekka Kuusisto - Musician. First with Taipei Symphony Orchestra 北市交 and then 東京都交響楽団 Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra.

Lil Lacy in Portrait with Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester 🌿

On 11 and 12 June 2026, Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester and their chief conductor Christian Øland will present a full programme of orchestral works by Composer in Residence, Lil Lacy.

The programme features the World Premiere of 'ELEMENTS' as well as recent works including 'Di drømm dæ bringe vos sammel' and 'Fluidity of Matter and Life' (Flute Concerto) with Thomas Jensen as soloist. The works have emerged from an ongoing creative dialogue between the composer and musicians over the course of her residency. She writes:

"Working closely with an orchestra over several years is a dream come true and allows for a level of artistic depth that cannot emerge from single commissions. I am very proud that this portrait concert brings together different facets of my musical language and reflects what can unfold over time with ongoing dialogues, shared artistic experiences and growing trust and sensitivity between composer and orchestra. I am deeply grateful to the Danish Philharmonic Orchestra and its musicians for this collaboration."

Lil Lacy is the Composer in Residence of Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester until 2027.

Later today, Oslo Sinfonietta will give the world premiere of 'A London Symphony' by Asbjørn Schaathun at the Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival 🤩

Written for the ensemble's 40th anniversary celebrations at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Schaathun's brand-new work is a personal tribute to the place of his student days: "the city of London - gigantic, mysterious and historical – and in my memory still unapproachable."

Three of Britta Byström's musical walks are performed these days 🎶

arte frizzante in Switzerland are performing her 'A Walk by Heart' and 'A Walk to Tchaikovsky' in four concerts while Göttinger Symphonieorchester in Germany performs her 'A Walk to Beethoven 🤩

Byström has composed around 20 pieces with some variation of ‘walk’ since 2015 – from small pieces for duo instruments to large scale orchestral works. Mussorgsky famously used the promenade between the paintings as a recurring theme. The theme might stay the same but the music and organisation changes. “It's a brilliant musical idea: letting the music move instead of stopping!” Britta Byström states: “It amazes me that it hasn't become a more popular form in music history.”
