Welcome to Impact the Future, where the future of our planet begins in the heart of our cities. Impact the Future is an "action tank" dedicated to transforming urban landscapes into thriving ecosystems of sustainability and innovation. With a vision rooted in the belief that the future of our planet begins in the heart of our cities, Impact the Future is committed to accelerating the adoption of sustainable solutions by harnessing the power of cities. Recognising cities as dense populations, decision-making hubs, and infrastructural powerhouses, Impact the Future aims to make cities our greatest opportunity for impactful change. By focusing on urban environments, where more than 70% of the global population will reside by 2050, the organisation aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 11, to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable by 2030. What we do:

Impact the Future catalyzes the implementation of sustainable solutions in urban areas by building bridges between business, public sectors, academia, and citizens. Utilizing the Quadruple Helix Model of Innovation, the organization creates a new paradigm for urban innovation that integrates diverse perspectives for sustainable urban development. That’s a wrap on the first Rethink Cities Summit!

On 8–9 September, over 100 participants from 26 cities across Europe joined us in Sønderborg to rethink the future of urban energy transitions. 🌍

The energy, insights and collaboration you brought made this first edition truly special. 🙌

Together we:
✔️ Engaged with businesses and innovators driving the transition
✔️ Explored Sønderborg’s progress on three inspiring field trips
✔️ Learned from successful cases across European cities
✔️ Took on real challenges in hands-on workshops focused on urban energy transition

We believe seeing is believing and at the Rethink Cities Summit we showed what's possible when public-private partnerships, political will and citizen engagement align. ✨

We’re happy to have Munich on board for the Rethink Cities Summit!

Munich is advancing its energy transition with a strong focus on decarbonizing heating and improving energy efficiency in buildings. The city is exploring innovative digital tools and governance approaches to expand its district heating network and tackle hard-to-reach areas. It also brings valuable experience in running impactful climate funding programs that combine social equity with high CO₂ reduction.

Helsinki is another city joining the Rethink Cities Summit! 🇫🇮

Representatives from will showcase one of their latest eCargo Project.

eCargo is a forward-looking project led by Forum Virium Helsinki, designed to accelerate the electrification of urban freight transport. By piloting public charging stations for electric trucks and vans, and mapping both current infrastructure and future needs, the project tackles one of the biggest gaps in city logistics: accessible charging for commercial vehicles.

We’re proud to welcome Dr. Kirsten Dunlop as a speaker at the Rethink Cities Summit 2025!

Dr. Kirsten Dunlop is Chief Executive Officer at Climate KIC, Europe's foremost climate innovation agency and community. Climate KIC leads NetZeroCities, enabling implementation of the European Union’s Mission on Climate Neutral and Smart Cities. She brings to her role a deep conviction in our capacity to learn and evolve into a climate-resilient society, and her over 30 years of experience catalyzing systemic transformations in a career spanning academia, consulting, banking, and the insurance industry, across three continents.

Kirsten serves on various Advisory Boards and is recognized as a leader at the European Commission Economic and Societal Impact of Research and Innovation (ESIR) expert group. A specialist in experiential learning and cross-disciplinary practice, she holds a Ph.D. in Cultural History from the University of East Anglia and a BA Hons in Art History from the University of Sydney.
