Stepping

The Stepping Technique & Choreography Workshop immerses participants in the rich and powerful culture, movement and intensity of Stepping, a highly energetic African-American form of body percussion. Steppers utilize their body as an instrument to create intricate rhythms and sounds with one's hands, feet and voice. They are both musicians and dancers who perform and move with great strength and intensity that challenges the mind, body and spirit. Strong emphasis will be placed on stepping technique, movement ex*****on as a group and the cultural expression of stepping. Overall, the workshop will emphasize moving and creating music together, and the importance of the emergence of stepping within African American history and culture.

Rhythm and Play

This interactive workshop is perfect for dancers, musicians, and rhythm enthusiasts of all levels, offering an opportunity to enhance your musicality and sense of rhythm through engaging activities. We will celebrate the rich tradition of rhythm games within the African American community and explore these cultural traditions and rhythm-based exercises that improve your timing, coordination, and musical phrasing using your body as an instrument while learning foundational percussive dance techniques, to create your own rhythmic expressions.

Take your last chance to register and join us for Beats Of Movement with Nyles Cossa from Mozambique. (we will close the registration on Friday, 28th at around 5pm)

From tradition to creation - no matter if you dance Hip Hop, House, Contemporary, Swing, Latin, the stories are similar and connected to many traditional african dances.

On SATURDAY, we will dedicate our time to learning Nyles’ perspective on improvisation, focusing on connecting mind and body movement. Often, our brain tells us, “I am too shy, I can’t do this,” or “I am too stiff.” We all carry insecurities. Let’s embrace Pulse & Flow and become an inspiration for ourselves and our surroundings.

On SUNDAY we will learn Xigubo. Xigubo is a traditional Mozambican warrior dance deeply rooted in cultural heritage. Solo performances within Xigubo often bring a competitive atmosphere to the stage, adding a thrilling dimension to the overall performance.

By taking all of this, you will also expand your own repertoire, making it even more impressive at the next jam/social dance.
