David Cattler's CloudFest 2026 keynote may seem a bit Mad Max, but what he's talking about is already coming to pass.

🗞️ OpenAI has contracted 3.2 gigawatts of power for Project Camellia, a new AI data center project in Effingham County, Georgia.

Georgia Power is expected to deliver the capacity in phases between 2028 and 2032.

OpenAI says it will cover the full cost of the infrastructure and electricity required for the project, rather than passing those costs on to existing customers. The company has also committed to independent annual audits and continued engagement with the local community.

OpenAI itself identifies power, land, permitting, transmission, workforce, and partner readiness as critical factors when selecting new infrastructure sites. It also says that its wider Stargate program has already surpassed its original target of securing 10 GW of US AI infrastructure by 2029.

The bit about "local community" should probably also be on OpenAI's list of critical factors, though, as sentiment around AI-focused data centers can make or break a local or state politician's career.

Media coverage around developments like this tend to focus on the hyperscaler or AI provider, the politicians, and the public—but not the hardware and service providers in between, without whom none of this would even work.

What factors get missed in public discussions? What misconceptions do you see? (For example, 20 minutes in the Cloud Fair exhibition hall at Europa-Park would teach someone about closed-loop cooling.)
