This year is a little less noisy but donΒ΄t forget: Tomorrow we celebrate 14th International Gruitday!
A lot of gruitiful things happened since Steve Beauchesne from Brewing Company, Vankleek Hill, Ontario, Canada, founded International Gruitday in 2013 to celebrate Gruitbeer, a beer with herbs instead or in addition to hops, according to medieval traditions and recipes.
2021 Dr. Markus Fohr from Lahnsteiner Brauerei at Lahnstein, Germany, took over Gruitday activities and started a new webpage www.gruitday.beer.
Joining www.gruitday.beer you will get to know Grutie, mascot of the page. He β or may-be βsheβ - is inspired by magicians like Gandalf from Lord of the Rings or Miraculix from Asterix. Butch Heilshorn created this idea when looking for a title image of his legendary book Against all hops, but his publishers thought it to be too extraordinary. Maja Fohr painted Grutie and also provided him with the βhopdragonβ as assistant.
State of the art: 37 breweries out of 17 countries joined www.gruitday.beer until January 31st 2026. To participate just send an email to [email protected]
2025 for the first time an international jury awarded a Gruitbeerbrewery of the year. The winner was Brauerei Napf GmbH from Switzerland. Second place was Octo Microbrewery, Cyprus, followed by Brauerei KaltenbΓΆck, Austria, as third.
