Trimming Hammer Felt – Precision Matters
Sometimes, even the smallest detail makes a big difference.
When the drilling angle is too steep, or adjacent hammer heads could come into contact with each other, the felt needs to be carefully trimmed. This ensures sufficient clearance and allows the hammers to move freely and precisely.
In this example, we are showing the felt-trimming process on the bass hammer heads of a Bechstein replacement set.

This customer entrusted us with the restoration and refelting of the hammers from a beautiful Gaveau grand piano. What makes this set particularly special is the original treatment of the hammer heads in the bass: the felt had been carefully trimmed on both sides.
Our goal at ABEL HAMMER COMPANY was clear: to preserve the character and appearance of the original hammers as faithfully as possible.
That is why we reproduced this distinctive bass trimming exactly as it was found on the original hammer heads.
For us, restoring hammers is not simply about replacing felt. It is about respecting the instrument's history, preserving its original character, and bringing the craftsmanship of the past back to life.
