International Systemic Research Conference 2017

International Systemic Research Conference 2017 The International Systemic Research Conference strives to bring together academicians with practitioners interested in systems theory and systemic research
(1)

The International Systemic Research Conference 2017 focuses on human systems – on communication patterns between persons and organizations (social systems), thoughts and feelings within persons (psychological systems), immune-neuro-endocrine processes (biological systems), and interactional processes between system levels (bio-psycho-social approach). It presents research with relevance for human

systems practitioners like psychotherapists, health professionals, teachers, social workers, organizational consultants, and social activists. Such research is methodologically challenging. It assumes human systems to be complex, functioning by circular and dynamic instead of linear and static cause-effect-modes. In fact, this reflects how researchers co-construct not only their research designs, but also their results. We therefore think that systemic research requires intensive dialogue among researchers, between researchers and practitioners, between professionals and clients. It establishes collaborative, non-hierarchical working relationships. The conference is open to a wide range of research methods. Qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods and theoretical contributions are equally welcome.

+++ Violence in Families – a Challenge for Practitioners and Researchers +++

Empirical data show clearly: Correlations between experienced violence and mental disorders like depression, somatoform, anxiety or traumatic disorders are high.
Meanwhile, violence in close relationships has been increasing over the last decades.

We are very proud that three of the best known international experts in the field of systemic approaches in understanding, researching and treating family, domestic and partner violence accepted our invitation to come to Heidelberg:

Sandra Stith, Distinguished Professor at the School of Family Studies and Human Services“ of Kansas State University has received funding from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in the U.S. She will give an overview on systemic research on couple therapy for partner violence.

Justine Van Lawick and Margreet Visser from Haarlem/Netherlands are two extremely experienced family therapists regarding family violence. They will talk about their actual High Conflict Divorce project „No Kids in the Middle“.
This project is a wonderful example how clinical practice and systemic research can go together and influence each other. Justine is also author of the excellent book “Intimate Warfare: Regarding the Fragility of Family Relations“.

We are looking forward to the discussion!

The Great Psychotherapy Debate: All just common sense...? – No! The debate is still going on!

The well-known “common factors model of psychotherapy” postulates that in order to explain treatment success of different approaches to psychotherapy or counselling, a set of common factors (such as clients’ social and biographical context, life events during therapy, strength of clients’ motivation, therapists’ personal qualities and the therapeutic relationship) are much more responsible as compared to particular methods or techniques for specific problems and disorders.

One of the international protagonists of the common factors model, Bruce Wampold (Wisconsin/USA and Modum Bad/Norway) will update you on the common factors model and the debate's relevance – for psychotherapy in general and for systemic therapy in particular.

Together with Günter Schiepek from Austria (who has developed a computer simulation of the common factors model), Jay Lebow from Chicago (current editor of “Family Process” and publisher of brilliant books about bridging research and practice in psychotherapy and counseling), Alan Carr from Dublin (who did some of the most important international reviews concerning family therapy interventions), Thomas Fydrich from Berlin (an advocate of behavior therapy who wants to take psychotherapy trainings into university settings to make them more “scientific”) and Kirsten von Sydow from Hamburg (who did a wonderful review of systemic RCT studies that has been a great help in the evaluation process of Systemic Therapy by German licensing authorities) you can expect an high-end brush-up on this topic!

+++ Organizational Research +++

Thanks to our wonderful speakers, we will shed light on topics such as Emotions in Organizations, Leadership, Change Management, Digitalization, Learning Cultures and Job Mental Health in Business.

We will focus on understanding emotions and emotion-related conflicts in family businesses, dilemma management, and on how start-ups change traditional organizations.

How to establish learning cultures in organizations, what differentiates charismatic from postheroic leadership, how to stay healthy in challenging working environments, and which role digitalization plays in all of this – are among the many questions we will tackle at the conference.
