Non-Piano/Toy Piano Weekend

Non-Piano/Toy Piano Weekend Non-piano/toy piano festival in Hamburg A piano that you can carry under your arm? What on earth is that?! The toy piano is, by no means, a toy.

The unique event was established by Jennifer Hymer: Concerts with toy pianos with other unusual instruments. It is a worthy instrument to play music from Mozart to Jazz. Its characteristic timbre and its miniature size give the concert a special charm and humorous tone. Ein Klavier, das man sich unter den Arm klemmen kann? Wo gibt’s denn so was?!

In Mats O Hansson's spectacular quartet ‘Blending In’ for four rebuilt food blenders the performers play bartenders who manipulate changes of color, produce chords between the blenders and yield overtones with pitch wheels. A percussive tapping movement yields a coordinated light show.

We eagerly await the premiere of Karlheinz Essl's T.U.M.P. - The Ultimate Melodia Piece. If we think of the organ as a giant mountain, then we can think of the melodica as a kind of shrunken-down version of that - a tump.
In his new piece, Karlheinz Essl gives this weak and humble instrument a powerful voice so that it can match with her great ancestor, the organ.

We'd like to thank our friends at Pianomovers UG for once again doing the literal heavy lifting for us! They have helped us safely get our instruments from point A to point B for years now and we have yet to find a tight spot they couldn't squeeze a piano through.

Our featured student composer for a toy piano piece this year is Niko Yin who is in the masters program of composition studying with Gordon Kampe in Hamburg. Her piece ‘Alice is not here’ for toy piano, music boxes and film is a fantasy letter in which ‘Alice’ has a dual identity- that of ‘Elise’ from Beethoven’s ‘Für Elise’ who transcends gradually into Alice in Wonderland. With Yuwen Huang - film.

The Queen of Toy Piano is coming to Hamburg! A long awaited dream come true for the Non-Piano/Toy Piano Weekend!

There’s not enough words to describe what Margaret Leng Tan has done for the success of establishing the toy piano as an important instrument. From her early close collaborations with John Cage to making his toy piano piece internationally known, she has gone on to commission countless pieces, touring all around the world with her theatrical toy piano performances.

We are thrilled and incredibly honored that she is now coming to Hamburg to celebrate her 80th birthday with us with works by Phyllis Chen, Erik Griswold and our youngest composer ever - 11-year-old Anastasha Suchin.
