Read Rick Fulker’s report on MOVIMENTO, now at his Facebook profile: „Last weekend at the end of a bone-dry summer (the water level of the Rhine at a record low), a day of biking and concert-going, and what did it do? Rained. All day. 38 kilometers, six concerts @ 15-25 minutes (why can’t more concerts be this short?), each coming as a little reward to the four hundred bedraggled two-wheel pilgrims. The organizers of MOVIMENTO sent us out from Brühl to Erftstadt to Türnich to Brüggen to Knappsack and back to Brühl, five to ten km per stretch. What happens when you perform one of the most famous pieces of classical music backwards? Organist Peter Klasen demonstrated that when he played the mirror-image of Bach’s Toccata for organ, and it sounded like - Bach. The downpour started just after his recital in the Brühl Palace Church in the morning and there was a brief period mid-day where I was half dry but by the time we got back to Brühl in the evening, soaked again. Wasn’t a particularly cold day though, so we „weathered“ it. And what could have been a more fitting finale than Vivaldi’s Four Seasons? After this rendition by Concerto Köln, I have absolutely no need to hear it performed by anyone else - ever. This is the reference. In between - zany acrobatics and over-the-top vocals by Tridiculous (try getting that one past auto-correct!), Bluegrass by Bashed Potatoes (also from Cologne), music that sounds like Schütz but was written by his students and coming through the clear-as-a-bell voices of Polyharmonique, and soaring, ecstatic jazz on harmonica and piano by Konstantin Reinfeld and Benyamin Nuss. Sensational. Might even be disappointed if I’m lucky enough to go next year and the weather is nice.“
