What defines a truly great film scanner like our Scanity? The effective support of professional workflows requires many aspects to work seamlessly together. For example:

1. Resolution:
Resolution matters for film scanning because high optical resolution preserves fine film grain and intricate detail from the original film. This ensures the maximum image
information is captured from the film frame, maintaining fidelity for both historical preservation and modern post-production needs.

2. High Dynamic Range:
Scanity HDR’s triple-exposure technology captures an extended dynamic range in a single pass, revealing subtle details in both shadows and highlights on challenging archival film stocks without sacrificing speed.

3. Scanning Speed: Scanity maintains real-time scanning speeds. This enables efficient throughput and ensures cost-effective digitization.

Scanity’s development marked several technical advances in film scanning. The system introduced sprocketless film transport paired with a unique roller gate, stabilizing film without mechanical contact with the perforations. This significantly reduced the risk of damaging and causing stress to film material during digitization.

Launched in 2015, Scanity HDR introduced an expanded dynamic range without compromising high-speed throughput, enabling the reveal of previously unseen details in both highlights and shadows of complex, dense black-and-white films.
2016 saw the integration of a dedicated WetGate system—a unique physical means to minimize scratches and dirt during scanning, directly improving image quality from original film
without requiring time-consuming post-scan restoration.

Today, Scanity is used by leading film archives and labs worldwide for the digitization of a broad range of film formats.
👉And there’s more ahead—keep an eye out for what’s next with Scanity.

DFT was guest at the Hochschule RheinMain (HSRM) in Wiesbaden, Germany, presenting an update on current film scanning technology, markets and the global archive landscape for Media Engineering students. What a fulfilling way to start the week on a Monday morning. Thanks to Prof. Mike Christmann for inviting me. Note: the blue line is not a laser sword from Star Wars, but an irradiation from the projector
