Árpád Schilling' Travelers, engaging the entire ensemble of the Lithuanian State Youth Theatre, tells the story of theater itself, explores what connects and divides individuals, what fades with time, and what remains. Voices Berlin is incredibly honoured to present two amazing performances of the play at HAU1.

The Long Shadow of Alois Brunner by Collective Ma'louba explored the true story of one of the most wanted N**i criminals to escape sentencing. Syrian playwright Mudar Alhaggi discovered the subject upon his arrival to Berlin and drew parallel to the two wildly different refugee stories — Alois Brunner's and his own.

Voices Berlin is not only about performances — it’s also about encounters, dialogue, and sharing ideas. This year’s discussion panels brought audiences, artists, and experts together to reflect on the world we create, question, and imagine through art.

Thank you to everyone who joined these conversations. Your presence made the dialogue alive.

🟨 Culture Across Borders looked at artistic creation in exile — how displacement shapes voice, responsibility, and identity — with Marina Davydova, Rustem Begenov, Rabih Mroué, Ersan Mondtag, and Dror Feiler in conversation with Stefanie Carp.

🟨 AI Takes the Stage explored how emerging technologies transform imagination and live performance, featuring Su Wen-Chi, Ivan Vyrypaev, Kojo Samuel, Richard Crawford, Asma Derja, Olivia Gillman, Otto Plesner, and Alexis Kirke, moderated by Scott C. Johnson.

🟨 Second Hand Trauma opened a space for reflection on memory, conflict, and reconciliation within the Balkan Affairs project, bringing together Christine Fischer, Margareta Ferek-Petric, Mladen Ivanović, several composers from the region, and Sergej Newski.

This year Voices Berlin has introduced a new format — Author Readings, offering a rare opportunity to witness renowned authors and dramaturgs read their own texts.

Nino Haratischwili’s love letter to Tbilisi; Krystian Lupa’s haunting diaries; Aleksandr Plotnikov’s failed cosmonauts, Mikhail Durnenkov’s many-voiced Navalny; Marius Ivaškevičius and Barzu Abdurazzakov narrating Tajikistan’s tragic Post-Soviet history — these were encounters with the people behind the words.

In Balkan Affairs, seven young composers from seven states of the former Yugoslavia confronted the long shadow of the Balkan wars with striking new works for voices and electronics. Their pieces, performed by Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, moved between brutal sonic force and delicate intimacy, weaving stories of memory, identity, conflict, and hope.

The evening then expanded into a walk-in video installation, a polyphony of voices gathered across the region: from taxi drivers in Sarajevo to professors in Belgrade to migrants in Montenegro — all reflecting on the fragile art of living together.

The Long Shadow of Alois Brunner made the audiences laugh and gasp at HAU1. This gripping play by Collective Ma'louba artfully weaved together Syrian and German history and brought to light thoughts and question on refuge, justice and hope.

Voices Berlin 2025 has come to an end, but the memories and encounters we shared will stay with us for a long time.

With 16 performing arts events, 4 discussions, 1 exhibition, artists from more than 20 countries, and 7 venues across Berlin, the third edition of our festival became our richest yet.

We are endlessly grateful to our partners, to every artist onstage and behind the scenes, and of course to you — our viewers, listeners, and supporters. Thank you for these unforgettable weeks.

See you next year.
