How do you stay strong when you are far away while your home is falling to pieces?
The closing event of the series “Break Up” zooms in on a specific topic with wide-ranging implications: how do Lebanese artists and thinkers in exile deal with the turbulent events back home, from a revolution in 2019 to the horrendous explosion in Beirut’s harbour in 2020, to the ongoing state crisis today? How do you think, work, and live in two places at once?
The event kicks off with the premiere of "Fitnat Beyrouth", a new film by acclaimed Syrian director Sara Fattahi – an intimate portrayal of Rotterdam-based up-and-coming artist and feminist activist Diana Al-Halabi. In the subsequent debate, Al-Halabi joins veteran Lebanese artist Lina Majdalanie and political analyst Jeffrey G. Karam, discussing how transnational solidarity and critical activism work in times of continuous crises and of social media, and what role feminism plays in shaping Europe’s and Lebanon’s future. The conversation is moderated by historian Leyla Dakhli.

Die Abschlussveranstaltung der Serie „Break Up“ behandelt ein sehr spezifisches Thema, das jedoch weitreichende Bedeutung hat: Wie gehen libanesische Künstler*innen und Denker*innen im Exil mit den turbulenten Ereignissen in ihrem Heimatland um – von der Revolution im Jahr 2019 über die schreckliche Explosion im Hafen von Beirut 2020 bis zur Staatskrise der letzten Monate? Wie kann man noch denken, arbeiten, leben, wenn man immer an zwei Orten zugleich ist?
Der Abend beginnt mit der Premiere von "Fitnat Beyrouth", eines neuen Films der syrischen Regisseurin Sara Fattahi – ein intimes Porträt der in Rotterdam lebenden Künstlerin und feministischen Aktivistin Diana Al-Halabi. In der anschließenden Debatte diskutiert Al-Halabi mit der libanesischen Regisseurin Lina Majdalanie und dem Politikwissenschaftler Jeffrey G. Karam über die Möglichkeiten transnationaler Solidarität und kritischen Aktivismus in einer Zeit unablässiger Krisen und digitaler Vernetzung – und über die Rolle des Feminismus in der Ausgestaltung der Zukunft Europas und des Libanon. Das Gespräch wird moderiert von der Historikerin Leyla Dakhli.
