The act of »residing«, so fundamental to humanity, faces unprecedented challenges today. In the context of current socio-economic and cultural uncertainties, precarious ecological conditions, forced up-rootedness, re-defined concepts of gender and family, and recent pandemic realities, we have to decide: How do we want to live together in the future? This international symposium will discuss playful and creative responses to changing desires for a home in societies that find it more and more difficult to provide one. GUESTS

TRANSLATING DREAMS INTO POLICY FOR MUCH-NEEDED CHANGE IN OUR BUILT ENVIRONMENT

In the last week of June we joined together for a truly inspiring dream - play - challenge workshop in Berlin.

We worked together to transform our individual dreams into collective policy demands for long-overdue change in our built environment. Every voice was vital to the co-creation of the exchanges that developed during the day.

We had chosen the theme The Future of Sustainability out of a sense of urgency towards our global failure to transform how we design, construct and dwell in our communities and on our shared planet to enable a sustainable future.

Dream Play Challenge was set up in 2021 aiming to become a platform for exchange beyond the traditional academic discourse. We collectively dream about, playfully engage with and develop a shared critical stance towards old and new ways of designing and building.

The choreography of such conversations matter: we work together to create a respectful space, where all felt welcome and “at home”, where all felt that their voices and their positions would be heard on an equal level. We set up a welcoming & non-hierarchical exchange, on - as the German language so beautifully expresses – Augenhöhe.

Thank you to all who took part for supporting us to achieve these goals at the July 2025 Workshop!

..our network of amazing people who brought their enthusiasm and their expertise to the Berlin workshop!

Together we dreamed - played - challenged how to create real change in the built environment, including policy change grounded in our collective dreams for a sustainable future.

Respondent 1:

Camilla Moneta is a partner and strategic advisor for sustainable transition at Virvle. She is an architect and has a background as a process leader for Powerhouse projects (innovation) at Snøhetta and as a Head of Architecture at the Norwegian Association of Architects (NAL). Now she helps businesses with transition processes, develops and conducts courses in sustainable business development, and writes about topics related to architecture.

THE POETICS OF SUSTAINABILITY

Join us at the Dream - Play - Challenge: Sustainability Workshop on 27th June 2025 at the Felleshus at the Nordic Embassies in Berlin.

Protagonist Two:

Susanne Schmitt, anthropologist, artist, and facilitator is co-head of the STEAM projects at the Museum für Naturkunde Bayern.

Susanne creates contact zones between species, disciplines, and institutions. Her independent art-science projects range from miniature bars for extinct insects to choreographic audiowalks for Natural History Museums. She is currently exploring hat making and nest building: ways of making small worlds with sometimes large consequences.

THE POLICY OF SUSTAINABILITY

Protagonist One:

Katrine Østergaard Bang, architect and consultant at the Danish Association of Architects. Katrine focusses on public planning and management at a municipal level. She is chief editor and co-author of A Guide to Danish Architecture - Towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

‘’The sustainability crisis, environmentally as well as socially, crosses borders, and engulfs all corners of the planet. To be able to act and contribute to the global sustainability agenda, we must share knowledge across borders and understand shared emergencies. But an architectural intervention must necessarily be an integral part of the society in which it is located, i.e., its geography, its cultural context and the users it serves must be the core of the chosen architectural solution.’’

Why do we need to develop a different way of creating architecture?

As Helena Mattsson & Deane Simpson discuss in their recent article “Towards and Architecture of Planetary Welfare” in Birkhäuser’s new book on Architecture & Welfare from the scandinavian Perspective: “it is crucial to articulate architecture as a field for play, experimentation, and social thinking where new conceptual figures can take form. ... You can rethink politics, come up with new social reforms and how to organize society, but to concretize these ideas, you need to have an architectural idea how to turn this radical fantasy into material form.” (Mattsson and Simpson 2025: 381)

Dream - Play - Challenge is a platform for exchange and experimentation, enabling a much-needed shift in the processes of design and creation of our built environment. As when diverse voices come together to work in a new and more playful way, retaining our idealism but also facing up to today’s challenges with realism, then surely doors will open for different built outcomes.

Just 4 weeks until the ‘’Dream – Play – Challenge: The Future of Sustainability’’ workshop!

Building on the success of the symposium “Dream – Play – Challenge: the Future of Residential Living” and the associated publication, this workshop applies the Dream – Play – Challenge methodology to another urgent topic in architecture: Sustainability. Dream – Play – Challenge sets up a different form of creative exchange, aiming to collectively and playfully challenge current ideas on attaining a truly sustainable future for our built environment.
