Do you run for joy? And would you like to run for something else too?
By this year´s „Run Against Blindness“ project we aim to collect a financial amount needed for 975 operations of trachoma*.
How does it work?
By registering a Prague Sportisimo 1/2 marathon starting number via SVĚTLO PRO SVĚT – Light for the World you donate 600 Czk for this project. You get a starting number if you donate at least 1.800 Czk.
More information and a registration form can be found on our website http://www.svetloprosvet.cz/en/how-we-help/prague-international-marathon/

One trachoma operation in developing countries costs only 400 Czk.

*Trachoma is spread by a direct contact with an infection. You become infected by a using a towel or by flies. Trachoma causes acute conjunctivitis. In case of repeated infections, lasting for years, the eyelid turns inward and lashes scratch the cornea. If this painful disease is not treated by antibiotics, infected person loses his sight. In later stages of a disease, operation can help, in a very last stadium operation only relieves from pain, but the sight cannot be restored.

“Friday 13th for 1300”
Turn bad luck into good luck!

Therefore, the non-governmental organization LIGHT FOR THE WORLD decided to start an action "Friday 13th for 1300". The event has three advantages. First, LIGHT FOR THE WORLD is offering the last starting numbers for the Sportisimo ½ Marathon in Prague. Second, if you register on Friday 13th the price for the starting numbers will be reduced from 65 Euro to 48 Euro. Third, running for LIGHT FOR THE WORLD will support the projects in different countries; the gains from the race will finance operations for sight-impaired people.
Take your chance and register for the Sportisimo ½ Marathon on Friday 13th! The event will last from Friday 13th until Sunday 15th.

Run with LIGHT and support the project „Thousand eyes for Africa“

March 2015, Prague. The non-governmental organisation LIGHT FOR THE WORLD started a campaign „1000 eyes for Africa“ with the aim to collect financial support, which is needed to carry out 1000 eyes (cataract) operation to restore eyesight. Esecially runners, who can still register for Prague Half Marathon (28.3.2015) and help blind people in Africa. 800 Czech crowns of the registration fee, which is the price of one cataract operation, will go to the people in need in Africa.

„Our ambitious plan is to collect 800 thousands crown, which will cover cataract operations for 1000 blind people in the development countries,“ explains Cestmir Hrdinka, the director of LIGHT FOR THE WORLD in the Czech republic. „We believe that runners will register for the international Prague Half Marathon and support our project in this way. Any runner who register through SVETLO PRO SVET, will save eye-sight from one blind person.“

The international Prague Half Marathon is already sold out but LIGHT FOR THE WORLD still has registration numbers available. People can register for the international Prague Half Marathon on http://www.svetloprosvet.cz/en/how-we-help/prague-international-marathon/. There is also chance to register for the Volkswagen Marathon, which will take place on 3rd May.

„The eye clinics we support carry out thousends eye operations yearly, mainly cataract and eye lid operation (trachoma). Most of the clinics have also mobile teams that regularly visit rural areas and offer eye care to people who otherwise would not be able to come to the clinics. One catarct operation costs 800 Czech crowns (30 EUR),“ is pointed out by Cestmir Hrdinka.

The association was established in Czech Republic in August 2007 as a sister organization of NGOs confederated in LIGHT FOR THE WORLD network. This network of NGOs has been successfully helping the visually impaired since 1988.

Bontulugou: the veil has lifted

A little booth is the pride of Bontulugou Pajas. Since her children are not living with her anymore, she is selling every day Curacura, fried nut paste, which she prepared in her hometown Yoyo in Burkina Faso. With the small income from selling food at the market she can afford her own life and support her famaly.
But a dark shadow falls over Bontulugous life: her eyesight is fading. First she thought that the smoke from the fire, where she is preparing the food is responsible for obscuring her view. But the gray veil is becoming more dense, even when she gave up her little booth at the market. Finally the 68-year old woman is dependent on the daily help of her children. One day her son Norbert visited her with his old rickety moped. He has heard on the radio about an aid mission of LIGHT FOR THE WORLD and wants to bring his mother immediately there. It is very rare, that an eye doctor comes into this area. Full of hope Bontulugou was driving with her son to the aid mission of LIGHT FOR THE WORLD. A view of the eye doctor is sufficient to determine that Bontulugou is blind from cataracts. But with an operation she could have back her eyesight again. The feisty woman has no fear, she is only thinking about being able to provide herself and her family again. The operation is over quickly, in just 15 minutes, the cloudy lens is replaced with a clear artificial lens and Bontulugou can go the next day back home. Her eyesight is saved! As soon as possible she wants to open her little booth at the market. But this time she rather wants to sell vegetables and fruits, because the smoke from the fire is reminding her of the difficult time of beeing blind and helplessness. But this time is fortunately over.

Selam can walk again!
“Look at her,she will not be able to walk again. Tragic that Selam has no future perspective anymore”. These are the frightening words the mother Zinabua of Selam was listening from the neighbours about her little daughter. A disability in Ethiopia is similar to a life in poverty. But the story of Selam will have a diferent ending.
Selam grew up with her brothers in a rural area of Ethiopia. When she was three years old she fall and fractured her leg. There was no money for a doctor and the fracture was healing badly. The girl started limping in the manner that her healthy leg started deforming. Finally she was not able to walk anymore. Selam`s mother is desperate. Her daughter will not be able to go to school, have no education. What shall she become?

Not all neighbours believe in a dark future for the girl. One neighbour encouraged the mother to look for help in a rehab project from LIGHT FOR THE WORLD. Soon the rehab assistant Zufan was coming in their house. With Selam she made exercises with her legs and provided the little girl with a splint and crutches. After five months of intensive exercise Selam can walk again by herself – at first still with crutches.

One year after

Today Selam is seven years old and can walk without any support. Her mother is relieved and she starts working as rehab assistant too. She is helping children with disabilities to get support and is telling the neighbours what children with disabilities can achieve when they get the right help.
