When it comes to vibrato in choral singing, how much is too much?
🎶 TUESDAY TALKS!
Every Tuesday, we bring one question to spark a conversation and hear how people from different musical backgrounds and experiences see it.
This week's topic came straight from the jury's discussion at last year's festival and it got us thinking:
When it comes to vibrato in choral singing, how much is too much?
On one hand, vibrato adds warmth, expression, and individuality to a voice. It's a natural part of healthy vocal production, and many traditions embrace it fully.
On the other hand, some argue that in choral contexts, a straighter tone helps voices blend more seamlessly, and that heavy vibrato can obscure tuning, text clarity, and the unified sound a choir works so hard to achieve.
So where's the balance?
Curious to hear your perspective:
👉 Should choirs encourage a more blended, controlled sound, or celebrate each voice as it naturally comes?
