Material in Motion: Exploring Design Possibilities at Design Shanghai 2026

On Day Three of Design Shanghai 2026, materials take centre stage—sparking ideas, shaping forms, and opening new horizons for design.

The Materials showcase gathers global brands and creators experimenting across cultures and industries. Here, material is not just a building block—it drives creativity, shaping how design is imagined, felt, and experienced.

From texture to colour, from structure to expression, every surface invites exploration. Visitors can touch, layer, and combine materials, discovering how contrast, overlap, and transformation reveal unexpected possibilities.

The fair concludes tomorrow—immerse yourself in a space where materials inspire, provoke, and expand the boundaries of contemporary design.

21/03/2026

At Design Shanghai 2026, the atmosphere is unmistakable—art is everywhere. Across halls and corridors, creativity unfolds in layers, where every step reveals a new encounter between design, material and imagination.

The Collectible Design & Art feature brings together a global selection of limited-edition works, spanning diverse media and approaches. Here, collectible design moves beyond objecthood—becoming a concentrated expression of aesthetics, identity and cultural narrative, where each piece holds both artistic intent and spatial presence.

Throughout the fair, a series of curated installations extends this dialogue into the environment itself. Interwoven across interior and exterior spaces, these works activate the venue through scenographic storytelling—transforming movement into experience, and space into a sequence of shifting perceptions.

In this immersive setting, design is not only displayed—it is felt.

Art is not confined—it surrounds.
An ongoing resonance of ideas, materials and sensibilities, unfolding in real time.

Made in JDZ is a curated feature programme by designer Ryan Ran that brings together ceramics, metalwork, and lacquer art to explore the intersection of contemporary design and traditional craftsmanship. Rooted in Jingdezhen’s historic heritage, this year’s edition reimagines traditional techniques through a bold, modern lens. The 2026 exhibition explores the theme "Craft Without Borders." Centered on the concept "On the Stage," this year’s zone highlights how craft is moving beyond the exhibition hall and into fashion and everyday life. Made in JDZ reflects the growing visibility of craft and its ongoing revival within contemporary youth culture.

“Traditional craft exhibitions often emphasize the technical height of craft itself, whereas Made in JDZ focuses more on an attitude of how craft can sustain itself, revive, and enter everyday life. We aim to present contemporary expressions by Chinese designers, artisans, and brands rooted in traditional craft. It sounds simple, but it is extremely difficult to calibrate. - Ryan Ran , Curator of Made in JDZ

This year’s curated exhibitors include Black Light, BAITU BAIWU, Niu Fangfang Studio, HANDICERAMICS, Marie Clarie, NEARBY, Qiaogongliqi, QIU Atelier, ROYOKO, Ruohan Oriental, SOLAB, STILLPLAY, XISHANGTAOSHE and SHEENYARD.

Within the Made in JDZ section, JDZ Gallery will also present works by more than ten ceramic artists from China and around the world, including Harumi Nakashima, Rika Herbst, Nikolas Iturralde Graber, Maria Ganeva, Ji Hyun Chung, Komai Masato, Wang Deng, Marina Erkovich, Matt Watterson, Leezy and Soonsik Kim.

Early bird registration closes in 3 days — don’t miss your chance to be part of Asia’s most influential design conversations at Design Shanghai 2026.
