The 2022 WAIC - World Artificial Intelligence Conference will be held on September 1-3 at the Shanghai World Expo Center, with two Shanghai local sub-venues, in Zhangjiang and Xuhui West Bank， and five sub-venues at home and abroad in North America, Europe, Singapore, South Korea and Hong Kong.

Themed with "Intelligent Connectivity, Infinite Multiverse", WAIC 2022 embraces the trend of the integration between AI and metaverse, presents the latest views and achievements in the AI field, delivers the innovative concept of the boundless multiverse, and exhibits the exciting outlook of “Smart Era”.

The conference is designed as a whole in accordance with the five pillars "conference, exhibition, competition, implementation and talent", fully demonstrating the "new technologies, new tracks, new scenarios, and new governance" in the field of AI and metaverse. WAIC 2022 is now set for the sail.

1. All events were orchestrated with hot topics and insights by heavyweights at home and abroad.

WAIC 2022 will be rolled out with a special formula "1+2+10+N": “1” means one opening ceremony; “2” refers to two plenary sessions (scientific frontiers and industrial development); “10+N” indicates ten main theme forums such as metaverse, brain-computer interface and unmanned systems, and N special activities, like AI Night Talk, WAIC Developer Community, etc.

2. The exhibition has been upgraded, and the metaverse is in the limelight.

The latest hotly debated in AI is the recent AI progress in terms of the Large Language Model ( ) wit , , etc., by leading AI laboratories. Many controversial claims were made that such a large foundational model approach has finally decoded the secret towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

On the other hand, influential thought leaders such as Noam Chomsky, Gary Marcus etc., have voiced out their viewpoints. Stanford University Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) has also conducted further work on analysing the opportunities and risks of foundational models and also identifying some of the areas that could be mis-used.

While such AI solutions are becoming more powerful with more opportunities for new applications, they may pose unforeseen risks such as DeepFake dis-information problem and actually cause more disruption to the global effort to achieve United Nations Sustainability Development Goals SDGs.

[A sneak peek of WAIC 2022/Metaverse Forum--Disrupting Dimension with Technology]

Since 2018, the resurgence of AI has ignited the passion of countless tech savvies to use technology to forge future life. This year, Metaverse—the next iteration of the internet—has excited mainstream tech giants and futurists alike. The internet is full to the brim with anticipation for this concept.

To toot the horn of industry landing for the Metaverse, WAIC will not only invite heavyweights to deliver keynote speeches and host blockbuster releases but also hold a number of forums carrying out milestone ceremonies such as the announcement of project cooperation and MOU signing. SenseTime has developed a "six-in-one" access system, AR inspection system, and city ark system through SenseCore, with more than 34,000 models.

The first GPU chip BR100 series of Birentech, developed under the original chip architecture with Chiplet technology, indicates a breakthrough in the general-purpose GPU chip with the largest computing power in China.

IntelliFusion's large-scale algorithm production platform, Flinthara Technology, ARM, Intel and other chip powerhouses will gather at the conference showcasing their latest technological achievements.

[The 30-day countdown to WAIC 2022]

On August 2, 2022, the 30-day countdown to WAIC 2022 was kicked off, and the registration channel for the audience and the media was opened at the same time, marking this year's preparatory work to reach the sprint phase.

WAIC 2022, the fifth consecutive year of the conference since 2018, will be held on September 1-3 at the Shanghai World Expo Centre, with sub-venues in Pudong and Xuhui. What began as a brave exploration, WAIC has blossomed into a global AI event dubbed as "technology bellwether, application showcase, industry accelerator, governance chamber".

With the theme of "Intelligent Connectivity, Infinite Multiverse", WAIC 2022 will forge ahead with the following features:

(1) Striving for a world-class event. A large number of heavyweight guests from the AI industry, science and finance field at home and abroad have been invited to participate and witness WAIC 2022 rolling out with a special formula "1+2+10+N": “1” means one opening ceremony; “2” refers to two plenary sessions (scientific frontiers and industrial development); “10+N” indicates more than ten theme forums such as metaverse, brain-computer interface and unmanned systems, and N special activities, like AI Technology Night Talk, WAIC Developer Community, to name a few.

(2) “Metaverse” will be in the limelight. The Metaverse Exhibition will celebrate the achievements of WAIC's fifth anniversary from dimensions of virtual experience and real-world display. The Top Ten “Treasure of Town Pavilions" will also be unveiled.

(3) Top-level Road Show has assembled world-class teams and cutting-edge innovation achievements. Supported by the world's leading enterprises, internationally renowned universities and scientific research institutions, the SAIL Award TOP 30 has been released with projects sticking out from more than 800 participants, ranging from metaverse, intelligent chips and AI models. Over 150 high-quality paper-writers, 15% from overseas, have tussled for the Youth Science and Technology Paper Award this year.

(4) Super applications are oriented to the landing and the synergy between online and offline. The conference IP image "威客 Brothers" made its debut. "威客" is the transliteration of "WAIC" in Chinese. The image design is inspired by the English letters "A" and "I", representing Artificial Intelligence. [A Brief History of WAIC - A resilient journey towards excellence]

World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) has gone through a resilient journey from Divergence to Convergence, Innovation with Transformation and Adaptation towards Excellence.

The divergence over AI visions has inspired scientific advancement and industrial development since WAIC's inception in 2018. WAIC 2018 and 2019 set the stage to connect AI ecosystem stakeholders and begin the dialogue to converge on a common and aspiring AI vision. Raj Reddy, 1994 Turing Award Winner, delivered the keynote speech to kick off the inaugural WAIC 2018. This is followed by a specular and most anticipated debate on the future of AI between Elon Musk and Jack Ma and also, keynote speeches by 2 Nobel laureates and 2 Turing Award winners in WAIC 2019.

With the Covid19 pandemic disruption in 2020, WAIC 2020 embraced the necessary innovation with the necessary digital transformation towards a fully online conference. It connected all ecosystem participants to continue the borderless dialogue globally. The show continued to go on with keynote speech by Yoshua Bengio, 2017 Turing Award winner, together with 1 Nobel laureate and 6 other Turing Award winners. This disruption created an unprecedented opportunity for WAIC to upgrade and fundamentally transform how the WAIC operated.

Despite the unforeseen challenge, WAIC 2021 remained resilient and returned by adapting into a fully hybrid conference. An impressive line-up of speakers with 6 Turing Award winners and Dr. Henry Alfred Kissinger, former US secretary of state participated with keynote speeches. As a result, WAIC achieved a historical high with offline and online attendees, speakers and exhibitions.

[WAIC 2021 – Past Event Promotion and Recap]

World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) 2021 was held in Shanghai last year, co-hosted by an array of China's economic, scientific and technological institutions such as the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the State Internet Information Office, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the China Association for Science and Technology, and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, with the core theme of "Connecting the World, Inspirational cities" and "AI Empowering The Digital Transformation of Cities".

According to the national strategy, artificial intelligence is one of Shanghai's three top industries and a major force behind the city's digital transformation.
