🎵Peter Riegelbauer, double bass

Riegelbauer was born in the Middle Franconia region of Bavaria, near Nuremberg, where he studied with Georg Hörtnagel, continuing in Berlin with Rainer Zepperitz. Before joining the ranks of the Berlin Philharmonic in 1981, he was a scholar in the orchestra’s Academy. In 1983 he and seven Philharmonic colleagues founded the Scharoun Ensemble which went on to co-found the Zermatt Music Festival & Academy.

[MEET OUR ACADEMY TEACHERS]

🌟Markus Weidmann, bassoon

Born in Mainz, Markus Weidmann received his first bassoon lessons at the age of eleven. He went on to study with Klaus Thunemann at the Hanover Musikhochschule. From 1993-95 he was a member of the Berliner Philharmoniker’s Orchestra Academy, studying with Stefan Schweigert. Before being engaged by the orchestra in 1997, Weidmann played with the European Union Youth Orchestra, the Kiel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Southwest German Philharmonic of Konstanz, among others. As a chamber musician he has performed with the Gutenberg Ensemble and the Philharmonic Octet. When the Berliner Philharmoniker is on the road, Markus Weidmann, a keen photographer, contributes photos to the tour blog, capturing many special and extraordinary touring impressions.

🎵This year, from 6-20 September, Markus will be working with several young bassoonists as part of the Swiss Wind Academy and the Zermatt Festival Academy.

[ZERMATT ACADEMY PROFESSORS]

🎻Rachel Schmidt, violin

🌟Violinist RACHEL SCHMIDT completed her musical studies with Valery Klimov at the Hochschule für Musik in Saarbrücken and with Thomas Brandis at the Universität der Künste in Berlin. The winner of numerous competitions, she received further encouragement as a scholar at the Villa Musica of the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate and at master courses given by Ruggiero Ricci, Ida Haendel and Isaac Stern. Rachel Schmidt joined the Berlin Philharmonic in 2001 and became a member of the Scharoun Ensemble in 2010.

[SWISS WIND ACADEMY 2025]

As part of last year’s festival, we were so pleased to be able to welcome five talented young Swiss wind players to Zermatt to form the Swiss Wind Academy. Together, they worked with members and guests of the Scharoun Ensemble from the Berliner Philharmoniker. They also performed chamber music and joined the Zermatt Festival Orchestra in a performance of Strauss and Dvořák under the baton of Radek Baboràk.

[REHEARSING WITH HOLLIGER - PART 2]

📯The Zermatt Festival Orchestra in rehearsal with conductor, composer and oboist, Heinz Holliger, back in September 2025.

Together, they prepared two programmes with works by Schubert, Fauré, Mendelssohn, Haydn and Beethoven.
They also performed the captivating and rarely-heard “Morgenstern Lieder” written by Holliger himself.
