🎧 INSIDE THE SONIC WORLD OF THE SUBSTANCE

Day 3 was all about sound & sound design! 🔊
In collaboration with Zurich University of the Arts ( ZHdK Zürcher Hochschule der Künste), SoundTrack_Zurich hosted a full day dedicated to exploring the sonic universe of the award-winning film THE SUBSTANCE.

The day started with an inspiring case study panel featuring the film’s sound team —
🎙️ Victor Fleurant (Sound Designer & Editor)
🎛️ Lucien Richardson (Supervising Dialogue Editor)
🎧 Stéphane Thiébaut (Re-recording Mixer)
🥁 Victor Praud (Foley Recordist & Mixer)

They took us behind the scenes of their creative and technical process, showing how THE SUBSTANCE’s unique sound world came to life.

In the afternoon, two hands-on workshops invited participants to dive even deeper:
🎧 Mixing & Storytelling with Stéphane Thiébaut and Victor Praud
🎙️ Sound Design & Dialogue Editing with Victor Fleurant and Lucien Richardson

An inspiring day for professionals, students, and sound lovers alike — filled with insights, collaboration, and creative energy! 💥

🎶 The evening concluded with the TonhalleLATE – Classic meets Electronic concert at the Tonhalle Zürich:
The Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich conducted by Frank Strobel presented Cinema in Concert, followed by a powerful live set from Freedom Fighters and guest musicians.

Day 2 Highlights 🔥

What an incredible second day! Thank you for your energy and participation! 🌟

⭐️ The highlight: A conversation with Hildur Gudnadóttir, Academy Award winner for JOKER and this year's ZFF Career Achievement Award recipient, moderated by Mirjam Skal.

🎼 Guðnadóttir received her award during the Cinema in Concert gala with the amazing Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich at Tonhalle Zürich. She also led the jury of the International Film Music Competition – where Mikal Grigorowitsch took home the Golden Eye for Best International Film Music 2025! 🏆

🎬 Swiss composer Sandrine Rudaz and director Denis Rabaglia gave deep insights into ON THE HIGH SEAS, while French composer Jérôme Rebotier shared his work on THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO.

🛠️ Our workshops covered everything: Building your professional image with Thomas Mikusz (White Bear PR), exploring AI's impact with Yevgeni Birkhoff and Martin Villiger, understanding production music with Martin Häne, working with agents alongside Zoë Hart (First Artists Management) and Antoine Le Guern (Agence Gaspard), negotiating contracts with Michael Künstle and David Burger, plus insights from five European Music Supervisors – every session packed with valuable takeaways!

At the traditionally SWISS MUSIC EXPORT BUSINESS MIXER LUNCH you had the chance to deepen your business network (presented by Swiss Music Export & SONART - Musikschaffende Schweiz).

Day 1 Highlights at SoundTrack_Zurich ✨

What an incredible first day! Academy Award winner Nicolas Becker shared amazing insights on DANDELION'S ODYSSEY, while Swiss electronic music pioneer Bruno Spoerri (DER WÜRGER VOM TOWER), Swiss Film Score Award winner Balz Bachmann (THE SPARROW IN THE CHIMNEY), and multi-award-winning director Christian Petzold (AFIRE) took us behind the scenes of their creative processes.

🤖 "How to Train the AI Dragon" - In cooperation with and , we tackled one of the industry's most pressing questions: How can authors be fairly compensated when their works are used as AI training data? Michael Egli, Noah Martin, Andreas Weidinger, and Benjamin Graf explored models and solutions for rights holders in this AI-driven era - moderated by Dr. Kerstin Bäcker.

💬 "Halbierung für alle?" - Together with SUISA, we discussed the potential impact of broadcasting fee reductions and the "Halving Initiative" on Swiss composers and the creative sector. Jacqueline Badran, Cécile Drexel, and Andreas Wegelin explored strategies and countermeasures to safeguard culture as an essential part of public service - moderated by Marielène Froidevaux.

The day wrapped up with our Matchmaking events - connecting women composers, sound designers, directors, and producers, followed by the International Matchmaking for all.

✨ SoundTrack_Zurich 06 is officially open! ✨

Yesterday evening, together with Reta Guetg (Vice Festival Director Zurich Film Festival), Pierre Funck (Forum Filmmusik Co-President), Andreas Wegelin (CEO SUISA) and Michael P. Aust (Head of SoundTrack_Zurich), we celebrated the opening of this year’s edition on the ZFF Festival Ship.

Over the next three days, SoundTrack_Zurich brings together nearly 60 international speakers and 30 program points, offering an inspiring platform at the intersection of music, film and television.

These are some of the questions that renowned composers and directors will explore during STZ06.
