Concert-goers who take leisurely plunges into worlds of sound, far removed from the bustle of everyday life. Lucerne Festival makes it all possible, and has been doing so for more than 80 years. Nestled on idyllic Lake Lucerne in one of the world’s most beautiful Old Towns, every year the city becomes a meeting place for leading performers from all over the globe – famous orchestras, legendary conductors, virtuoso soloists – who convene to celebrate a festival of sound. In Jean Nouvel's concert hall, equally famous for its phenomenal acoustics and exquisite architecture, they encounter visitors from Switzerland, Europe, and all around the world.

A little throwback to Saturday afternoon on Europaplatz.

MEUTE brought their acoustic techno set right into the city: eleven musicians in matching red, sousaphone and trombone trading lines with trumpets and marimba, out in the open air.

Hours later, they took the stage properly at , and the Lucerne Hall turned into strobe lights, bass, and a crowd that didn't stop dancing.

“Gordon's music takes no prisoners,” The Guardian once wrote about “Trance.”

On Sunday afternoon at Blackbox Kosmos, Ensemble Helix/Studio for Contemporary Music of the Hochschule Luzern - Musik conducted by Gregory Charette, proved the point: 50 minutes of shifting rhythms, electric bass, saxophones, synthesizers, and guitar, building without pause toward one long, ecstatic climax.

What a way to close a summer!

Cape Town Opera's ensemble and Chineke! Orchestra brought George Gershwin's “Porgy and Bess” to , spirituals and jazz filling the hall from the first note to the last. The cast poured everything into “Porgy and Bess,” act after act.

165 minutes flew by in an instant, and the ovation said it all.

The party started before the concert even did!

MEUTE surprised the foyer with a spontaneous pop-up set, brass sound spilling into the crowd ahead of their show in Lucerne Hall.

Inside, eleven musicians in red turned the hall into a dance floor for «Jubel — Ten Years»: club hits and original tracks, an hour of techno and house played entirely on acoustic brass, trumpets, trombones, saxophone, sousaphone, and marimba standing in for a DJ booth.

"We organists are the real adventurers in music," Thomas Ospital has said, and his recital at KKL Luzern, Concert Hall, made the case with five contrasting works.

Dudley Buck's “Concert Variations on ̒The Star-Spangled Banner’” opened the program, followed by Charles Ives's “Variations on ̒America’,” itself based on a melody of English origin. Sergei Rachmaninoff's “The Isle of the Dead,” in a transcription for organ by Louis Robilliard, and Marcel Dupré's “Symphonie-Passion,” inspired by the Wanamaker Grand Court Organ in Philadelphia, gave the afternoon its scale.

Iain Farrington's “Live Wire,” with its jazz-inflected rhythms, closed the recital, performed without intermission.

Poetry and Bach, sharing the same evening, the same breath.

Amanda Gorman recited “With This Bright Voice”, “For Renee Good”, “For Alex Pretti”, “New Day's Lyric”, “What We Carry”, and “The Hill We Climb” between the movements of Bach's Cello Suites Nos. 1, 3, and 5, with Jan Vogler on cello.

Singers appeared from every direction: behind the audience, from the side aisles, from the highest rings of the hall. Horns rang out from where you'd least expect them.

Kent Nagano's historically informed «Ring des Nibelungen» closed with «Götterdämmerung» at , semi-staged so Wagner's drama spilled off the stage and into the room. Young Woo Kim as Siegfried, Åsa Jäger as Brünnhilde, the Dresden Festival Orchestra, Concerto Köln, and the Dresden Festival Choir of the Richard Wagner Academy carried it to the end.
