Jeremy Thomas has left us – one of the greatest independent producers in world cinema. Winner of the Academy Award for Bernardo Bertolucci's “The Last Emperor”, in 2005 the Locarno Film Festival had the honour of presenting this legendary London-born producer with our Raimondo Rezzonico Award.

Over a career spanning more than fifty years, he championed directors such as David Cronenberg, Nagisa Oshima, Jonathan Glazer, Werner Herzog, and Nicolas Roeg, lending his courage and vision to works that have shaped the history of cinema.

Locarno joins in remembering a man who believed in auteur cinema like few others.

On the centenary of his birth, we remember Swiss actor Hannes Schmidhauser, born in Locarno on September 9, 1926. To mark the anniversary, “Uli der Knecht” (1954), directed by Franz Schnyder and starring Schmidhauser in the title role, was included in the Locarno79 programme as a tribute to him.

The photograph takes us back to 1993, when Schmidhauser was honoured by the Festival with the Pardo d’argento, pictured alongside his friend and fellow Swiss actor Liselotte Pulver.

Evoking the mordant səx comedies of manners that thrived in the late 1960s and early '70s, 's latest directorial venture is a riotous and rueful rumination on how our closest relationships can come to define us.

Adapted by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones from Cesc Gay's Spanish-language dramedy “The People Upstairs” (2020), this audience favourite at stars a ferociously funny quartet – Wilde herself, plus , , and – as two couples who come together one night for an intimate dinner party that quickly, and hilariously, goes off the rails, as insecurities, emotional baggage, and hidden desires bubble up to the surface.
