Since 1946, the Locarno Festival has been one of the major international film festivals. Every August the town of Locarno becomes the world capital of auteur cinema for eleven days.

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Agustina Chiarino (1977–2026), one of Uruguay’s leading film producers and a driving force behind contemporary Latin American cinema.

Her connection to Locarno Film Festival was a longstanding one. She produced “Tanta Agua” (Ana Guevara and Leticia Jorge, 2013), an Open Doors project developed during the 2008 focus on Latin America. She later served on the Carte Blanche jury in 2013 and mentored numerous filmmakers through the Open Doors Consultancy during the programme’s focus on Latin America and the Caribbean.

Our thoughts are with her family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives and work she touched.

Locarno79 will be honouring the pioneering makeup effects artist and seven-time Academy Award winner Rick Baker with its Vision Award, presented by Ticinomoda.

His groundbreaking work has shaped some of cinema’s most iconic creatures and characters, influencing generations of artists and filmmakers. Rick Baker will receive the award in Piazza Grande on August 12 and present in the programme two key films from his career: “An American Werewolf in London” (1981) and “The Nutty Professor” (1996).

“Le Dernier Voyage” by Abdoulaye Sall follows Maodo, a street vendor who returns home after years away, trying to rebuild his everyday life. When one evening he does not return, his wife and son set out across the city, driven by uncertainty, memory, and the hope of finding him.

Selected for the Open Doors Screenings 2025, “Le Dernier Voyage” is now available to stream for free as part of Locarno SHORTS.

The Locarno Film Festival remembers Carlo Ginzburg, one of the most important historians of our time, who died on June 17, 2026, at the age of 87. Born to the Jewish anti-fascist intellectual Leone Ginzburg and the writer Natalia Levi – later Natalia Ginzburg – Carlo Ginzburg went on, through his own writings, to profoundly reshape contemporary historiography.

In March 2023, Ginzburg attended Locarno for “L’immagine e la parola”, a Festival event held alongside that year's Spring Academy: he took part in a long public conversation with director Radu Jude on the relationship between history and images.

We remember him with gratitude for that visit, and for impressive body of work that continues to ask us to observe the past, especially in challenging times such as the ones we are living nowadays.

For a remarkable career featuring defining collaborations with some of the greatest modern filmmakers, Asia Argento will be celebrated with the Life Achievement Award at Locarno79. A singular presence on screen and behind the camera, she has shaped a distinctive body of work by exploring new artistic languages and creative freedom.

The Italian actress, filmmaker, and musician will receive the award in Piazza Grande on the evening of the 13th of August and present Jorge Thielen Armand’s “La Muerte No Tiene Dueño” in the programme, which premiered at the Quinzaine des Cinéastes earlier this year and features Argento in a leading role.
