Seit der Einweihung der neuen Orgel im Musiksaal mit dem ersten Orgelfestival im Stadtcasino Basel im September 2020 ist die Kultur- und Musikstadt Basel um einen bedeutenden Akteur reicher. Die «Königin» des neuen Konzertsaals soll seit der ersten Ausgabe des Festivals nun regelmässig ins Zentrum gerückt werden.
Das Orgelfestival im Stadtcasino Basel stellt mit dem Fo
kus auf die «Orgel als Instrument des Konzertsaals» einen neuen Beitrag zur Basler Festivalkultur dar und trifft zugleich den Nerv der Zeit:
Konzerthäuser wie die Kölner Philharmonie, die Tonhalle Zürich, das KK Luzern, das Auditorium Maurice Ravel Lyon, das Leipziger Gewandhaus oder die Berliner Philharmonie haben längst Orgelkonzerte in ihren Saisonprogrammen etabliert.
Aufsehenerregende Orgelneubauten in neuen Konzertsälen wie der Elbphilharmonie, der Pariser Philharmonie oder dem Auditorium der Maison de la Radio in Paris – alle mit eigenen, äusserst erfolgreichen Orgelkonzertreihen – beweisen, dass insbesondere in jüngster Zeit das Thema Orgel im Konzertsaal eine richtiggehende Renaissance erlebt. Für lange Zeit war die Orgel in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung insbesondere als Instrument in kirchlichem Kontext bekannt: in ihrer über 2000-jährigen Geschichte waren die Orgel und ihre Musik jedoch immer auch im weltlichen Kontext beheimatet. Mit dem Neubau der Orgel im Stadtcasino ist auch in Basel die Möglichkeit entstanden, Orgelmusik unabhängig vom religiösen Kontext kennen- und lieben zu lernen, ohne die geistliche Musik auszuschliessen. Das Orgelfestival im Stadtcasino hat es sich zum Ziel gemacht, das Instrument und die Musik als verbindendes Element zu beleben – und das nicht nur zwischen ‚weltlich‘ und ‚kirchlich‘. Orgel als vielfältiger Klangkörper
Bei einer Konzertsaalorgel mit ca. 60 Registern steht eine beinahe unerschöpfliche, immer neu zu kombinierende Klangpalette zur Verfügung, welche die Darstellung praktisch jeder Form von Musik möglich macht. Das dynamische Potential der Orgel wird von keinem anderen Instrument erreicht: Die gesamte Palette vom leisesten Säuseln bis zum gewaltigen Tutti, der Klangfarbenreichtum und eine grosse dynamische Flexibilität machen Kooperationen mit Chören oder grossem Sinfonieorchester ebenso realisierbar wie mit TänzerInnen, Bands oder SolistInnen. Erstmalig in einer Konzertsaalorgel wurde im Stadtcasino Basel zudem als viertes Manual ein sogenanntes «winddynamisches Orgelwerk» realisiert, bei welchem der Klang eines Tones noch nach dessen Anschlag beeinflusst werden kann. Dies ermöglicht die Erzeugung ganz neuer Klänge und Klangverbindungen, mit denen sich für KomponistInnen ein völlig neues Inspirationsfeld geöffnet hat. Orgel neu denken
Das Engagement der Festivalleitung wird vom Grundgedanken motiviert, die Orgelkultur durch speziell erarbeitete Konzepte und Konzertformate in ein neues Licht zu stellen. Insbesondere sieht sich das Festival als ideeller Förderer von KünstlerInnen, und Kulturschaffenden, welche die gleiche Begeisterung und den Mut mitbringen, aus dem Dreieck 'Orgel – Bühne – Konzertsaal' neue Konzepte zu
entwickeln: über Genregrenzen hinaus, Kunstgattungen verbindend und an alle Generationen und Menschen gerichtet. Die Orgel ist das einzige klassische Instrument mit einer ungebrochenen Tradition der Improvisation von den Anfängen bis heute. Die Freiheit, Offenheit und Spontaneität der aus dem Moment heraus entstehenden Musik kann dem Generationen, Kulturen, Genres und Kultursparten verbindenden Gedanken starke Impulse geben. Kooperationen auf lokaler, regionaler und auch internationaler Ebene sind bei diesem Ansatz, die Orgel neu zu denken, von grosser Bedeutung.

A concert hall organ with about 60 stops offers an almost inexhaustible palette of sounds that can always be combined in new ways, making the performance of practically any form of music possible. The dynamic potential of the organ is unmatched by any other instrument: the entire palette from the softest whisper to the mighty tutti, the richness of tone color and a great dynamic flexibility make cooperation with choirs or large symphony orchestras just as feasible as with dancers, bands or soloists. For the first time in a concert hall organ, a so-called "wind dynamic organ movement" has been realized as a fourth manual in the Stadtcasino Basel, in which the sound of a note can be influenced even after it has been struck. This enables the creation of completely new sounds and sound combinations, which have opened up a whole new field of inspiration for composers. Rethinking the organ
The commitment of the festival management is motivated by the basic idea of putting organ culture in a new light through specially developed concepts and concert formats. In particular, the festival sees itself as an idealistic promoter of artists and cultural workers who bring the same enthusiasm and courage to develop new concepts from the triangle 'organ - stage - concert hall'. beyond genre boundaries, connecting artistic genres and addressing all generations and people. Much space is given to improvisation in the OFSB. The organ is the only classical instrument with an unbroken tradition of improvisation from its beginnings to the present day. The freedom, openness and spontaneity of music emerging from the moment can give strong impetus to the idea of uniting generations, cultures, genres and cultural branches. Cooperations on a local, regional and also international level are of great importance in this approach of rethinking the organ.
